‘Last chance to back out Alicia,’ the blonde nurse looked at her, an unreadable expression on her face. ‘What have I got to lose?’ She smiled weakly. Marie nodded at a masked man beside her, who came towards her with a surgical mask on. His eyes crinkled gently as if he was smiling at her, and he busied himself with the monitor beside her. ‘I’ll be there with you the whole time, and I’ll be right here beside you when you wake up, okay?’ It was important to Marie that Alicia knew she was not alone in this. She smiled at the nurse, and took a deep shaking breath to steady herself. ‘Okay,’ said the anaesthetist, ‘when I pop this mask on I want you to take a few deep breaths and then count to 10 for me, can you do that?’ Alicia nodded, and he gently put the oxygen mask over her face.
