Sugar me down with concern
'No one tell me what to do, I'm wise enough to handle my own business', said Rufus Freed. Yes I know my type 2 diabetic state is getting out of control. Family and friends try to encourage Freed to take better care of himself but the stage of denial lingers.
Instead of consuming proper dosages, Rufus would throw the pills in the garbage can. Then he tells his family all meds had been taken for the morning. What a bold faced liar he was. No wonder his kin folk chastise him like a child.
If you want to be treated as grown, act accordingly said his sister. 'Well I am an adult and not one single individual has the right to check me', responded Freed. Starletta implied, we have to see about that big bro.
Starletta reaches out to other friends and family members of Rufus once he goes outside to Crotona Park. She informs each of what is going on with his medication inconsistency. Time for the family to join hands and be a support system for our beloved.
It is now Saturday, the pool of kinship shows up with hot food and juice beverages to ensure Freed will be at ease when discussion begins regarding his health awareness. One cousin mentioned to everyone that tone of voice is everything when getting a clear message across to Rufus. He understand but refuses to recognize the standing problem.
Family point out a few ideas for an effective solution. Staying with a relative who will monitor his med intake daily is first outlook. While being placed into a nursing care facility would mark second alternative to wellness.
Rufus shouted, 'I don't want neither'. He's comfortable at home and is worried about losing his independency. Worst case scenario is you have a stroke and injure yourself badly then what Rufus, spoke his older brother Cleotus.
When asked what medicines he take, Rufus states ' I have no idea but I take em'. Freed has prescriptions for Anticoagulant and Memantine. Not sure of proper usage, he gets angry with relatives and scream GET OUT!
Family decides to remain put and not leave knowing the need for lending ongoing encouragement. We all are aware you forget things from time to time, said Cleotus. Brother usually help Rufus pay his Con Edison light bill and rent every month. Starletta utters, the family will always have your back regardless of where you reside.
I will consider the second option and try living in a place for nuture, said Rufus. The relatives start singing church hymns and cry because their loved one has made a decision to do right by himself. Family only stepped up to the challenging situation out of concern.
Rufus have a cousin working at a nearby hospital and she calls an ambulance to come pick him up after he suddenly catches a stroke. Shockingly this happens during the point of Freed agreeing to be placed at a nursing home. There is a numbness of his legs and arms. Tears drip from Rufus eyes. Don't cry, you're going to be just fine says a relative.
Ambulance arrives to escort Rufus to Montefiore Hospital. Four family members meet him there. Kin is told that their dear Rufus would be admitted for clearance by running tests and taking blood.
After four days of stay, Freed makes the decision to transfer at Woodycrest Nursing Home. Doctor stated, 'look at the resource as an advantage in health care opposed to not getting the much needed services which will save your life'. Several hours later transportation take Rufus Freed to his new home.
Nice to meet you Mister Freed, said Residential Director Lenny Perez also stating 'we are happy to have you reside with us and make this your home'. Certified Nursing Assistant, Cheri will show you to your single room occupancy. 'I use to be a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired after twenty four years of hard work', said Freed.
Loud speaker comes on and security guard say 'Due to a new covid 19 pandemic, the facility will be on lockdown to all residents'. They must be tested within a week's timing. 'I rather take time out to get rehabilitated than not', spoke Rufus.
Freed realizes that being a patient and LPN are two different lanes. Now lets take a moment to see if the sunflower is yellow on the other side. For anyone could be in another person's shoes at any given instance.
