The clanging of cymbals together made Cassandra wince in her sleep and in no time, she heard the door creak open, the sound of the cymbals now very loud, it drained every sleep from Cassandra's eyes.
She slowly sat up, a deep frown marring her features as she glared at the elderly woman of the previous night who was repeatedly clanging the cymbals. She was dressed in her usual black flowing gown, her graying hair tied neatly in a bun and her eyebrows perfectly carved.
Now that it was daybreak, Cassandra could properly see the features of the room and she gasped when she noticed she had counted wrong. The number of bunks in the room were more than twenty and the large room was filled with about fifty ladies ranging from age ten to about twenty.
The ladies jumped from their respective beds, stretching and yawning as they stood and Cassandra's frown deepened. Of all places, Nick had asked them to put her here. He was really treating her like she was truly homeless and she would surely tell him off about it when she saw him. She was not homeless, she had a family, and if one of her family hadn't been forcefully taken away from her, she wouldn't be here. Her life wouldn't be this messed up. She wouldn't have to wake up this early, finding herself in a room filled with so many people.
The elderly woman finally left the room without a word and everyone began arranging their beds, some grabbing a towel to have their bath. Cassandra watched them in confusion, wondering what was happening. Was there an event they had to prepare for or what?
With a roll of her eyes, Cassandra fell back to bed, pulling the blanket over her head as she tried to go back to sleep. They could wake up as early as they wanted to, after all, they had all been sleeping when she had walked in. It was clear they had had their fill of sleep, but she didn't. She still needed to sleep.
The pat on her shoulder made her groan and she turned to look at who it was.
The hazel eyes from the previous night greeted her again and Cassandra shut her eyes.
"Later, Gabrielle. I wanna sleep." She mumbled, pulling the blanket over her head but Gabrielle reached out to drag it down.
"You can't sleep. We need to start work immediately or Grandma will be mad," she announced and Cassandra's eyes flew open.
"Work?"
"Yes, work. There are some cleaning to do and some other chores and errands."
"And what has that gotten to do with me?"
"You're one of the omegas so it has everything to do with you." Gabrielle stared at her like she should know this and Cassandra almost snorted.
"You guys don't even know me and you tag me as an omega?" She said more to herself but Gabrielle heard her.
"Aren't you one? Why will you be here if you aren't?" The girl asked in surprise.
"So everyone here is an omega." She asked, glancing at the women in the room and Gabrielle nodded.
"And in the next room. This is occupied by females only. The male omegas occupy the other room."
"Well, I'm not an omega. Now let me sleep," Cassandra rolled her eyes, dragging the blanket over her head and sighing deeply.
She could tell little Gabrielle was still looking at her and she groaned, pushing herself to a sit-up position. There was no way she could sleep in a room noisy as that. The voices of the ladies as they chattered disrupted her sleep.
"I can't sleep because of you and others in the room." She rubbed her eyes warily, pushing herself from the bed and stretching herself.
"Great!" Gabrielle grinned at her. "I was worried you'd get into trouble with grandma. Grandma is quite scary. I don't want her to yell at you."
Cassandra rolled her eyes, knowing fully well who grandma was.
"Isn't grandma the woman with the cymbals? How scary can she be?"
"Oh no," Gabrielle shook her head. "That's Miss Zee, her assistant. Miss Zee is scary but grandma is scarier." The girl shuddered and Cassandra stared at her.
"Miss Zee or Mrs. Zee?" She raised a brow but the girl only stared at her.
"I thought werewolves get indebted to some mate bullshit. It seems the wicked never find their mates." She said to herself, scoffing loudly as she thought of Hunter. She could still remember how Nick had said he couldn't find his mate. No mate for the wicked after all. She smirked at that.
As she dressed, she could feel eyes on her but she paid no attention to that, instead she concentrated on getting into a Jean that seemed too tight for her.
The door flew open again and Mrs. Zee stood before it, her face hard as a rock as usual as she stared at them.
The ladies fell into a line without being told and Cassandra joined in at the back, wondering how long they had been doing this to know what to do without being told.
They marched out of the room and by the side, were the male omegas marching out of their room too in a line.
They marched into a large hall where an older woman with a walking stick( wooden cane) stood. She wore a big frown on her face and Cassandra needed no one to tell her that she was the scary grandma Gabrielle had spoken about.
There was a little boy of about five sitting on a wooden stool beside the old woman and in his hands was a ribbon which he played with. Cassandra stared at him, still surprised to find children as little as this in a packland. She had always pictured the packland to be a place filled with adults and it had not occured to her that she could find little children. It was intriguing to see them though; they made the place come alive and she suddenly felt safe in there.
The little boy looked up that moment and their gaze locked, making her gasp at how dark his eyes were. He had long lashes that cast shadows on his skin and he looked so beautiful, it was adorable. It made Cassandra wonder whose child he was and why he was sitting all alone. Could he be grandma's grandson?
She smiled at him, waving a little but the boy only stared at her for a moment before looking away. She frowned at that. Did rudeness run in the family's blood?
The sound of the omegas moving as they divided themselves into lines of ten brought her out of her thought and she joined in the activity, the old woman standing before them. Miss Zee was standing behind as the grandma allocated various chores to different groups.
Cassandra heaved a sigh of relief when she fell under the group who was to clean the hallway. Other chores sounded strenuous so Cassandra was glad she was lucky enough to fall into this group. She waved to Gabrielle who had been given some errands and she followed her group to the hallway where they spread out to clean up.
They were given a piece of cloth to wipe the dust from the window and as Cassandra cleaned, she smiled. She could still remember helping her mother out in little chores like this while at Mr. King's house. Surprisingly, this brought back memories and Cassandra sighed heavily, turning to look at the girl who was cleaning the other side of the window.
"You know, doing this kind of thing brings back memory." Cassandra tried to start a conversation but the girl remained quiet, focusing on her work instead with a grim look on her face.
Cassandra shook her head at that, opening her mouth to speak further but shutting up when she heard sounds of footsteps walking towards them. She turned slowly to look and a gasp fell from her mouth as she saw Hunter walking forward with Nick and other warriors walking behind him. They were all dressed in a uniform and it was clear they were going for practice.
Hunter was a man who stared at people like he controlled everything just with his mere presence; he knew he did, so he walked with so much confidence.
Cassandra couldn't get her eyes off Hunter and she found herself staring at him as he walked. His uniform was quite tight and it clung to his skin, showing all his aligned muscles. He looked so hot in his uniform and Cassandra wondered if he looked hot in everything he wore. She had seen him in a shirt the previous night and had almost drooled, and now, he was looking so dashing in his uniform. His dark brown curls fell over his eyes, as usual, giving him that sexy aura, and his full lips were curled up in a frown, his proud set of forest green eyes looking straight ahead. Cassandra felt the ticklish feeling well up in her tummy once again as it had done the first time she had seen Hunter.
