My Father’s Son

I was shocked to hear the words my father said to me.
How could he need me when he's spent all our lives telling me how I was not the son he wanted. He paraded his mistress and son in front of us and made demands of us that weren’t reasonable. This man had forced me to leave my family, forced me to push myself as hard as possible, so I would never have to feel weak in front of another person again, even my own father.
How could he need the son he discarded for another?
I was confused by the words he said, but I also knew I had to go. I didn’t have a choice. He was my father, yes but he was my mother’s husband and I needed to go for her.
