Chapter one – That Night
Evelyn
That night, I was on my way to a party that would cap off a week filled with joyful events: the grand college graduation ceremony, a cozy family dinner, and, on Saturday, a night of dancing with my friends Jenny and Lya.
As I stepped into the club, it seemed like all eyes were drawn to us. I felt absolutely stunning in my sleek black dress, its high v-neck accentuating my perfect figure and its snug fit highlighting my hips. Jenny, with her fiery red hair cascading in loose curls, emerald eyes, and fair complexion, looked radiant in a short, form-fitting red dress that hugged her curves in all the right places. Lya, sporting chic short brunette hair and round brown eyes, exuded elegance in her long white dress, boasting a graceful U-shaped neckline at the back and a slender waist that caught everyone's attention.
The nightclub pulsed with energy as we made our way through the crowd, our laughter and smiles lighting up the dimly lit space. Neon lights danced across the walls, casting vibrant hues over the pulsating dance floor. The air was alive with the beat of the music, drawing people into its rhythm, while the mingling scents of perfume and cologne enveloped us in a sensual haze.
Our group of college friends was already gathered at tables, drinks in hand, ready to make the most of the night ahead. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, anticipation hanging thick in the air. No one had any intention of staying seated; tonight was meant for dancing, laughter, and making memories that would last a lifetime. As I approached our friends, waving and exchanging warm hugs, I knew that this was going to be a night to remember.
The music was booming, syncing with the beat of my heart. It felt like every song was written just for me. Everyone was smiling, celebrating my success - my graduation. Yeah, I know, it sounds a bit self-centered, but I let myself feel that way because I was so happy.
The music was loud and energetic, and I let it carry me away. I danced without worrying about anything, feeling totally free and joyful. I closed my eyes and let the music flow through me.
I was at the peak of my life, and that night was the end of a big chapter. I had just graduated from college, and I was starting a new part of my life full of hope and possibilities.
I felt like a movie star, even though my degree was in International Relations, not exactly glamorous. I was about to start a boring job at my dad's export company, dealing with paperwork and stuff. But at that moment, all I wanted was to enjoy the attention, especially from guys who wanted me but couldn't have me. I felt confident and beautiful, like I could do anything.
After dancing a lot, turning down a few guys who wanted to kiss me, and having fun with my friends, we finally sat down to take a break. That's when I saw a guy sitting alone at a table. He was good-looking, with dark hair and green eyes that seemed to see right through me.
I couldn't stop looking at him. He was different from any other guy I'd seen before. He had this mysterious vibe, like he knew all my secrets.
"No, Evelyn!" Lya interrupted my thoughts, pulling me away from staring at the guy. "He's too old for you! He's probably married, or at least divorced and has a lot of baggage."
"Or maybe he's a guy who's focused on his career and now wants to try new things in life..." Jenny said, though I couldn't tell if she was being sarcastic or just innocent.
"Or," I added, "maybe he just wants what I want: to have fun! A handsome guy like him to end the night with a touch of charm and elegance!"
"Don't look now!" Lya warned me, sensing I could talk about the guy for hours. "He's coming over!"
She lowered her head so quickly that if he was really coming our way, he definitely noticed!
"Good evening, ladies!" He greeted us, and I felt my heart race. I raised my eyes, and he was even more handsome up close: his hair was smooth and black, tied in a bun; his emerald green eyes were sharp and intelligent; his short, neatly trimmed beard accentuated his jawline, giving him a serious yet well-groomed look. He was wearing a sleek black suit that matched his eyes.
"Good evening, sir..." Lya was quicker to respond, as I was still observing him closely.
"Adams. Alexander Adams. And may I know the names of the ladies?" He responded to Lya but finished the sentence by looking directly into my eyes.
"I'm Lya, this is Jenny, and... well... this 'lady' who finds you quite handsome to say anything is Evelyn! Or just Eve, if you become 'close' to her." She let out a mischievous laugh, and I looked at her disapprovingly. He just gave a small smirk, a bit naughty, but not enough to reveal that he was in the same anticipation as I was.
"May I buy a drink for you, Miss Eve, then?" His question was accompanied by the gesture of extending his hand to help me up.
I gave him my hand, feeling his large hand, which despite seeming so strong, was so gentle when it held mine. As I rose, he placed his other hand at the small of my back, and together we ascended two flights of stairs, to a quieter area of the club where tables were more scattered, and the music was softer, allowing for conversation.
"I have to confess; I've been watching you while you were dancing with your friends. Are you a professional dancer?" I chuckled, tilting my head back a bit. I must admit, I was feeling a bit tipsy from the alcohol.
"Thank you for the compliment, but no! I've always loved dancing; it's a way to keep both body and mind healthy without hitting the gym too hard!"
"So, what do you do in life?" He tugged at his own earlobe, a habit I quickly noticed.
"Would you believe I just graduated in International Relations? Today marks the last day of celebration, actually!"
"International Relations, huh? That's very interesting! I sense a successful and wealthy career coming your way!"
"Let's hope the Man Upstairs hears you. And yes, I love the field. I've always been passionate about politics, diplomacy, and especially international trade."
"And what do you plan to do now that you've graduated?"
"Work; get my hands dirty; dive headfirst into business!" He smiled at my exaggerations, between sips of whiskey. "I have friends who are thinking about doing an MBA first, but not me."
"That's great. I'm sure you'll be a successful diplomat." He raised his glass for a toast.
We continued chatting for a while, discovering we had a lot in common despite the ten years between us. He also enjoyed traveling, reading, and learning about different cultures.
More by the absence of a ring on his ring finger than his assertion of being unmarried, I believed he was truly single.
"I find you a very interesting woman..." He took a strand of my hair and tucked it behind my ear.
"Thank you. I'm glad you think so, because I also find you a very interesting man."
"Do you?" It was a playful confirmation of his next actions.
His face drew closer to mine, and we kissed. The kiss was timid and respectful at first; I stopped to look into his eyes and felt my heart racing. I knew I wanted to kiss him more.
"Alexander..." Now it was my voice that sounded playful.
I didn't get to finish the sentence because Alexander stood up and extended his hand to me again. This time, he pulled me into an embrace, and I felt a warmth coursing through my body. His arms were so warm and strong, yet subtle and delicate; I didn't feel pressured or hugged disrespectfully. I saw him close his eyes before kissing me again. This time, I surrendered to the intense kiss without hesitation.
Can you fall in love with a first kiss? That's what I asked myself at that moment, as the kiss lasted for the following minutes, and when it ended, we were both breathless.
"That was..." I began the sentence, but I had no idea what I would say next.
"Amazing?" he questions, murmuring into my ear.
"Yeah, amazing!"
We smiled, and I hoped this would be the first of many kisses. I knew there was something special between us, and even before saying goodbye, I was eager to see him again.
Until that moment, the night had been magical, like a fairy tale. It was the night I wrapped up the celebrations of my graduation, and it was the night I met a man like I had always dreamed of meeting.
However, it wouldn't end the same way.
