Chapter One
Chapter One The Guardian In an ancient kingdom called Kingston, peace had settled over the land for as long as anyone could remember. The kingdom was surrounded by thick forests and towering mountains that seemed to disappear into the clouds. Every morning, a cold, gentle wind swept through the villages, carrying the scent of trees and freshly turned soil. Most of the people of Kingston were farmers, hunters, and traders. Farmers worked in the fields from sunrise, tending to their crops and livestock. Hunters ventured into the forests in search of game, while traders filled the busy marketplace with goods brought from distant villages. Life in Kingston was simple, but the people were content. Each morning, the kingdom came alive with activity. Children ran through the narrow paths between wooden houses, farmers carried their tools toward the fields, and traders arranged their goods beneath small wooden stalls. Among the hunters was a young man named Kai. Kai had grown up under the care of his grandfather after the death of his father. From an early age, his grandfather had taught him the ways of the forest and everything he needed to survive in the wilderness. Kai learned how to track animals, recognize footprints, follow trails, set traps, and move silently through the trees. His grandfather was patient with him, teaching him not only how to hunt but also how to respect the forest. “The forest provides for those who understand it,” his grandfather often told him. “But it can also punish those who refuse to listen.” By the age of ten, Kai had already become remarkably skilled at hunting. He could recognize the tracks of different animals and tell how recently they had passed. His young age often caused other hunters to underestimate him, but those who knew him understood that Kai possessed a natural gift for the wilderness. His grandfather always reminded him that being a hunter was not simply about catching prey. It was about patience. It was about survival. And most importantly, it was about knowing when the forest was telling you to turn back. Kai was observant, brave, and curious. He noticed things that others often overlooked—the movement of leaves, the faintest sound coming from the bushes, or footprints hidden beneath the grass. His curiosity sometimes led him deeper into the forest than he intended. But there was one thing Kai did not know. His grandfather had never told him everything about the forest. One cold afternoon, after spending several hours hunting, Kai finally began his journey home. He carried the animal he had caught over his shoulder and followed the narrow path leading back to the village. When he reached home, smoke was already rising from the chimney. His grandfather was inside preparing the evening meal. Kai placed his catch down and immediately began helping with the chores. He gathered firewood, fetched water, and helped prepare the food. Hunting might have been his greatest skill, but Kai never considered himself too important to help at home. That evening, the two of them sat beside the fire. The wind moved gently outside, rattling the wooden walls of their small home. For a while, neither of them spoke. Everything seemed peaceful. But neither Kai nor his grandfather knew that their quiet life was about to change forever. The following morning, Kai returned to the forest to hunt. The air was colder than usual, and a strong wind moved through the trees, making the branches sway above him. Kai followed the tracks of a deer deeper into the forest. Then he stopped. Something felt wrong. He slowly looked around. The forest was unusually quiet. There were no birds calling from the trees. No animals moved through the bushes. Even the wind seemed to have disappeared. Kai tightened his grip on his hunting knife. He had spent most of his life in these woods, and he knew when something was different. Still, his curiosity pushed him forward. He followed the deer tracks until they led him toward the foot of the mountain. Then he noticed something on the ground. A footprint. Kai crouched down. He examined it carefully. It was unlike the tracks of any animal he had ever seen. The mark was deep in the earth, almost as though whatever had made it was unusually heavy. But the shape was unfamiliar. Kai touched the edge of the footprint. A strange feeling passed through him. He immediately pulled his hand away. “What are you?” he whispered. His eyes followed the trail. The footprints continued toward the mountain. Kai hesitated before following them. They eventually led him to an ancient stone partly covered by moss and vines. The stone was larger than Kai, and its surface was marked with strange carvings. Kai stepped closer. A symbol had been carved into the stone. He reached out and carefully brushed away the moss covering it. The strange marking became clearer. Kai stared at it. He had lived in Kingston his entire life, yet he had never seen anything like it. There was something about the symbol that made him uncomfortable. For a moment, he wondered who had carved it and why it had been hidden so deep in the mountains. Then he noticed something else. More footprints. They continued beyond the stone and disappeared between the trees. Kai stood silently. His curiosity told him to follow them. But another feeling warned him to turn back. His grandfather's words suddenly came back to him. Know when the forest is telling you to turn back. Kai looked toward the dark trees ahead. For the first time in his life, he wondered if there were secrets hidden within the forest that even his grandfather had never told him about. He took one step toward the footprints. Then he heard something. A faint sound came from somewhere behind him. Kai froze. He slowly turned around. Nothing. Only the ancient stone stood behind him. But when he looked at the symbol again, his heart began to pound. For the briefest moment, the strange marking seemed to glow. Then it went dark. Kai stared at it, unable to move. Whatever secret the forest was hiding, he had a feeling that he had just found the beginning of it.
