Susan, John, and Barney eventually found themselves back at the River House, looking forward to a fine night of dreams and libations, before resuming the Resistance struggles on the morrow. Barney was almost dancing around the house, his tail resembling a rotor on an out of control helicopter. When it finally knocked a bowl of candies off a low coffee table, John introduced a more sanguine element to the house in the form of a full dog food bowl.
The sun was dropping below the horizon. The world was in that state of lighting that the Scotts would call 'the gloaming,' a magical moment in any day, when the daylight and the night wrestle for control with equal force, and where the things of the night and those of the day can confront each other.
