I sat next to Layla who was fidgeting with her napkin as she prepared herself for what was going to be an uncomfortable conversation with my brother, Sean. He sat across us with his arms crossed, raising his eyebrows with suspicion, “Accident? Really?”
Sean was not a man easily convinced and definitely he seemed to have some doubts that my marriage was not some shady business deal.
I showed Layla some look of encouragement for her to continue with the story that we had planned ahead of the dinner. Sensing her panic rising, I held her hand underneath the table and caressed it gently. She turned to look at me and gave me a faint smile, “Yes, an accident and Sky saved me from men that my ex-husband sent to hurt me”
Sean gasped and reached out the glass of win
