Chapter 1: A System from the Sky
Noah Steele walked alone through the bustling streets, watching the crowds and the fleeting smiles on their faces. A pang of envy hit him—he longed for that carefree happiness. “Ugh…” he sighed deeply, the kind of sigh that sounded like an old man reflecting on a life of hardships. Yet Noah was barely eighteen, a high school senior drowning in exams and stress. Yesterday, he had returned home for a short holiday from school, expecting a few days of relaxation. But the moment he arrived, his world shattered. His father… had cancer. The word “cancer” had always seemed distant, something he read in newspapers or saw on TV. Now it was painfully close, a shadow looming over his family. Watching his mother’s despair and his father’s forced smiles, Noah felt like his chest was pierced with countless knives. Despite his own heartbreak, his father insisted Noah focus on school. “Don’t come to the hospital for a while. Your mom will be fine. You need to study,” he said. But Noah could see the reluctance in his father’s eyes. He didn’t want his son to witness his weakness. His father had always been Noah’s pride and role model, and now, the role model was fading under illness. Feeling like a zombie, Noah wandered out of the hospital. His steps carried him to a nearby forest, his childhood sanctuary, a place filled with fond memories of simpler times. Here, the green grass, wildflowers, and chirping insects could make all worries fade—if only for a while. “I can’t believe I even made it here without getting hit by a car,” he muttered, half-joking at his own carelessness. As he walked, memories of happier times flooded back—his father’s laughter, playing in this very forest. But instead of comfort, it deepened his pain. “Damn it, why me?!” Noah screamed in frustration. At that exact moment, a sudden beam of light, barely visible, struck his head. He collapsed, losing consciousness instantly. “Ding… spatial transfer complete. System energy depleted. Due to exposure to cosmic rays, time and space fluctuations, unknown alterations occurred. Reaction deemed stable; no deletion necessary. Searching for host…” “Ding… scanning” “Ding… found Chinese descent. Host conditions extremely poor. Not recommended.” “Ding… scanning surrounding area. No other candidates detected. Confirming current human as host.” “Ding… analyzing host. Body normal, mind normal. Initiating neural connection.” “Ding… neural connection complete. System binding successful.” “Host body weak. Initiating enhancement protocol…” Noah’s body began to convulse violently. His muscles and bones shifted beneath his skin as if something alive was wriggling underneath. Pain shot through him in waves, leaving him unconscious again. When he finally came to, night had fallen. He sat up, disoriented. “What… what just happened? Did I faint? I remember shouting at the sky… and then a flash of sunlight… and then nothing.” He noticed something strange. His body felt lighter, stronger. Every movement was easier. “Is this… really me?” A breeze brushed against him, and he noticed his clothes had torn apart, barely covering him. His eyes widened in shock at the change. “Ding… host enhancement complete. Duration: 8 hours 30 minutes.” “Effect excellent. No adverse reactions detected. Report complete.” “W-who’s there?! Show yourself!” A sweet, high-pitched voice rang out. “I am here, Master!” Before he could react, his vision blurred. When he refocused, he was standing in a cold, metallic hall. The walls, ceiling, and floor were silver-white, empty, yet brightly lit. It felt like a high-tech laboratory or a sci-fi facility. Then, a small figure appeared before him—a girl around thirteen or fourteen, radiating a strange energy. Noah’s heart skipped a beat. She was ethereal, almost dreamlike, her beauty mesmerizing to the point where he forgot to breathe. “You… you’re…?” he stammered, unable to process what he saw. The girl giggled. “Hehe, you don’t recognize me?” Noah blinked. “I… I’ve never seen you before. Why do you feel so… familiar?” “Pfft… you look silly, Master,” she teased, her voice like tinkling bells, playful yet strangely wise. Noah snapped out of his trance, noticing the mess his sudden reaction caused. “Oh no… I—uh… I’m fine, I think,” he muttered, embarrassed. The girl laughed, clearly enjoying his awkwardness. “You’re cute when you panic, Master!” Noah instinctively tried to rush toward her, but she vanished, replaced by a solid wall. He slammed into it and slid down like a turtle flipped on its back, tears stinging his eyes from the pain and embarrassment. Finally regaining his composure, he looked up at her, still laughing. “Who… who are you? Why am I here?” “You ask too many questions at once!” she said, tilting her head, pouting playfully. “You’ll overwhelm me if you ask so fast!” Noah sighed. He hated seeing anyone cry, and her faux-pout tugged at his heart. He straightened, trying to comfort her. “Okay… okay, I’ll slow down.” The little spirit floated closer, her eyes sparkling. “Good. Now, let’s start. There are stats to check, abilities to unlock, and enemies waiting for you outside. Your adventure begins now, Master.” Noah took a deep breath, flexing his new strength. His life had changed forever, and despite the fear and confusion, he felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time: hope. With the system spirit at his side, mischievous and radiant, Noah Steele knew one thing for certain: his life would never be ordinary again.
