Chapter Two

My heart skipped a beat. Danger? What was he talking about? I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I should trust him, but there was something in his voice that made me feel like he was telling the truth. Juan saw the confusion on my face and quickly added, “I know this is a lot to take in, but you need to hasten your steps. Your mother is waiting for us.” My mother? What did she have to do with any of this? I waved to Diego as a sign of goodbye. I followed Juan as he led me to the back of the school. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, but I didn’t know what it was. As we approached a secluded area behind the school, my mother appeared out of nowhere. She looked just as surprised to see Juan as I was. “I’m sorry, but I had to tell her the truth. We shouldn’t keep it from her any longer,” Juan said, sounding defensive. My mother didn’t say anything, but I could tell she was uncomfortable with the situation. Juan turned to me and said, “Sofia, I’m the Alpha of our pack and you both are werewolves.” I felt like I was in some sort of dream. Werewolves? Alpha? That couldn’t be real. Juan must have noticed my disbelief because he continued, “I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s the truth. There is a rival pack in town, and they want to take over our territory. You are the next in line to take over as Alpha.” Alpha? That sounded like something out of a fantasy novel. My mother finally spoke up, “Sofia, what Juan is saying is true. We have to prepare you for what’s to come.” I was still in shock, but I knew I had to trust my mother. She wouldn’t lie to me. I looked at Juan and asked, “What do I need to do?” “We have to train you. You need to learn how to control your transformations and hone your fighting skills,” Juan said. I felt a sense of dread wash over me. I had always felt like an outsider in school, but I never imagined it was because I was a werewolf. My mother put a comforting hand on my shoulder, “Don’t worry, Sofia. We will be with you every step of the way.” I nodded, feeling a sense of determination rise within me. As we walked home from the meeting with Juan, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. The reality of being a werewolf was starting to sink in, and I had a million questions swirling around in my head. “Mom, is dad a werewolf too?” I asked, finally breaking the silence. My mother looked at me, shaking her head. “No, he’s not. Miguel is human.” I felt a pang of disappointment. If my father wasn’t a werewolf, that meant he couldn’t be the Alpha. “Why isn’t he a werewolf?” I asked, hoping for some sort of explanation. My mother sighed, “It’s complicated. Werewolf genetics are tricky. Sometimes, a person can be born with the gene, and other times, they can’t. It’s completely random.” I nodded, feeling a sense of understanding. It made sense now why my father wasn’t going to be the next Alpha. But that left me with even more questions. “What about me? How did I become a werewolf?” I asked. My mother smiled, “You inherited the gene from me. It’s passed down from generation to generation.” I was fascinated by this new information. “So, does that mean that Diego could be a werewolf too?” My mom nodded, “It’s possible, but we would’ve discovered it, since he is your friend and he comes around.” “Oh, that makes sense.” I said, as I nodded my head. As we continued walking, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for my mother’s honesty. I knew it wasn’t easy for her to reveal her true nature to me, but it meant everything to have her support. “Mom, I’m scared. What if I’m not strong enough to be the Alpha?” I asked, feeling a sense of vulnerability. My mother put a reassuring arm around me, “Sofia, you’re stronger than you realize . We’ll train you and prepare you for anything that comes your way.” I felt a sense of comfort knowing that my mother had faith in me. But there was still a nagging feeling of doubt in the back of my mind. “What if I can’t control my transformations?” I asked. My Mother smiled and answered, “That’s why we’ll train you. With practice, you’ll be able to control it.” I nodded, feeling a sense of determination rise within me. I was going to do whatever it takes to be a good Alpha. As soon as we got home, I ran to hug my dad, who looked confused but hugged me back nonetheless. “Hey, Dad, how was your day?” I asked, trying to act casual. “It was good, thanks for asking,” he replied, still looking a bit puzzled. I quickly said goodbye to him and made my way upstairs to take a shower. As I let the warm water wash over me, I realized that I had been asking the wrong questions. Instead of wondering how I became a werewolf, I should be asking myself why I should become the next Alpha. After I finished my shower and got dressed, I sat on my bed, thinking about my new reality. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Why should I become the Alpha when Juan was still alive, healthy, and young for that matter? It didn't make sense. I couldn't help but wonder if my parents had secretly wanted me to become the Alpha all along. Maybe they had seen something in me that I hadn't even realized yet. Or maybe they just wanted to bring power to the family. As I stared at the ceiling, lost in thought, my mother's voice brought me back to reality. “Sofia, are you okay?” I nodded, “Yeah, I’m fine.” “Do you want to talk about anything?” she asked, sitting down beside me. I hesitated for a moment before blurting out, “Why should I become the next Alpha when Juan is still alive?”
