Chapter 1: The Rejection
The packhouse was decorated for a celebration that was supposed to be mine.
Eighteen years. I had waited eighteen years for this night. My wolf was supposed to awaken. My mate was supposed to claim me.
Instead, I stood in a torn silver dress at the bottom of the grand staircase while everyone stared at me like I was filth.
"Mischa."
His voice cut through the whispers. Alpha King Kael.
He descended the stairs, tall, brutal, beautiful.
My heart hammered. "Kael, please—"
"Silence."
The Moon Goddess bond snapped taut between us. Mate. He was my mate. I had felt it the moment I turned eighteen an hour ago, a searing pull in my chest.
"I, Alpha King Kael of the Blood Moon Kingdom, reject you, Mischa, as my mate and Luna."
The entire ballroom gasped. Then laughed.
My knees hit the marble. Pain ripped through my chest like my soul was being torn with claws.
"Why?" I choked out, blood filling my mouth. "I'm your mate!"
"You? A wolfless orphan who can't even shift? You think you deserve to stand beside a King? You were a mistake my father pitied. I am correcting his mistake."
Behind him, Selene, my best friend, appeared in a red dress. She looped her arm through Kael's.
"Someone like her could never give you an heir. But I can," she purred.
Kael looked down at me one last time. "You are banished from this kingdom. If you are still on my land by sunrise, my guards have orders to kill you."
He turned his back. The pack turned their backs. Even the music started again.
I crawled out of that packhouse on my 18th birthday, bleeding, rejected, with nothing but the pathetic silver dress.
I stumbled into the cursed Northern Forest — the forest where rogues go to die. Snow began to fall. My bare feet left bloody prints.
"This is where Luna Mischa dies," I whispered.
Then the cold took me.
I didn't know that a pair of ice-blue eyes was watching me from the shadows. I didn't know that my death would be the awakening.
Deep in the snow, something ancient inside me — something that had been sleeping for eighteen years because it was too powerful for a child's body — finally opened its eyes.
And it was not a wolf.
It was a Lycan Queen.
