I can’t concentrate on any files I have in front of me. I look up from my desk, in the open space and cross Chloe’s eyes. She gives me a small smile of encouragement, before getting back at her own papers.
After spending the night at her place, I feel better, but this insecure feeling is still present. I shake every time the phone rings, for no reason at all.
When I check the clock, for umpteenth time, I am finally relieved to see it is lunch time. I inform quickly Chloe that I will be going to the station.
I would have loved to go with her but she got some work left to do and I can’t be a bother more than I already am. She helped me so much already.
I go down to the reception, and stop when I see a police officer in he waiting area.
I go his way, and he looks up from his phone when I approach. Mickael stands up to meet me.
“Hey,” I greet him with surprise. “I thought I should go to the station?”
“Yeah, that’s where we will take note of your point of view of the event, but I thought I’ll accompany you there. It is not to control you, if you can’t that’s fine,” he says quickly to not force me, making me chuckle. “But I can show you the way if you are ready now,” he finishes with a smile.
“I’d like that,” I reply with a smile.
We go out together and I follow him on the right.
“So, when did you arrive in town?” he asks me to make conversation.
“Just a few weeks ago, I’m still getting used to being here.”
“How do you like it so far?”
How do you like it here so far?
It’s not Mickael’s voice I’m hearing now, but Jordan’s. He asked me this question during the night. The part where I met him in the bar is a bit confused, I was drinking and was tired. I can’t recall everything I told him, but I feel that he had asked me that exact same question already.
I shiver, feeling I told him too much that night.
“Sorry,” Mickael says quickly to cover up my silence. “You haven’t got the good experience but I swear it is not normally like that. It is a good place to live.” He pauses, looking at me. “There are just some places to avoid.”
“I think I got that now,” I reply with a soft smile.
We walk in silence for a few seconds before he opens a door, making me realize we have arrived at destination. He nods at the receptionist, and leads me to an office. He knocks and the answer comes quickly to let us enter.
An older man is seating at a desk buried with papers. He looks up at us when we enters, he gently smiles while greeting me. Mickael indicates me a chair in front of the desk, while he goes leans on the wall, next to the desk.
“Nice to meet you… Jane,” greets the old man, looking very tired. He removes his glasses to pass a hand to dry his sweat on his forehead.
“Jade,” I correct shyly.
“Yes, Jade, I apologize. We have been working restlessly about Saturday night’s issue. Actually, we have been going at it for years, but they started to go after our own, making fun of the police. You can imagine that our officers cannot let it go,” the policeman informs me. I notice the decoration, and can only figure he is someone important. “Would you like to have something to drink?”
“I’m fine, thank you.”
“Very well. I won’t beat around the bush, Mickael told me you were one of the witness in the event? I have personally recorded your friends. We are just missing yours and that other girl, Sarah’s statement.”
He gets out a small camera and sets it up. It is just a small camera but it makes it all so official, and I am not sure if it reassures me that our encounter from the other night is taken so seriously, or if it pressures me more that it seems so important.
Mickael gives me a small head sign, to encourage me.
“Please, feel free to tell us how it happened, we won’t interrupt you. I’ll ask my question after. Leaves no details, no matter how small or insignificant you may think they are, leaves that up to us to decide.”
I look up again at Mickael who smiles gently at me to encourage me again and I start to tell them my point of view., including my encounter with Jordan in the bar.
“And this man? Could you be able to describe him to us?” the chief police officer I learn to know, asks me once I am done with my story.
“He told me his name was Jordan, he is tall, dark hair, blue eyes. I think he has tattoos on his arms, but I was too tired that night to pay any attention to the details of the tattoos, I wouldn’t be able to describe them.”
“Jordan?” the police man repeats with surprise. “He told you his name was Jordan?”
“Yes,” I nod. “Do you know him?” I ask in return.
“Yes, he is always mixed up with everything their gang does. Every time he can make fun of us, he does, but we have never been able to legally prove he is the author of his deeds,” Mickael explains me with obvious annoyance. He doesn’t like Jordan, and I think I can understand why.
“But with this, we have a eye witness, he can’t get away with it,” continues the captain with a smile. “Mickael, accompanies Miss Jade to your office, so she can fill a lawsuit against him.”
Mickael nods and makes a sign for me to follow him. I am a bit surprise and I don’t know if I want to actually fill a lawsuit against Jordan. He didn’t hurt me and he might be pissed and get his revenge if I do. He knows where I live and it will just be more dangerous that way.
“Don’t worry, I know what you are thinking, but we’ll protect you,” Mickael tells me while we walk to his office. “My dad didn’t leave you much choice but you have to understand that we have been trying to take Jordan down for months, if not for years. But no one will come against him and he always avoid any camera or identification. It’s frustrating because we know it’s him but we can’t prove it. You’re the first one who told us what happened with him. I understand if you are scared, but I swear on my life that nothing will happen to you. I won’t permit it, I won’t let my guard down until we caught that bast-“
Mickael seems so pissed against Jordan, and almost cursed at him. I understand that they want to get him, and I would actually feels better to know he isn’t living freely, while being able to get to me anytime.
Mickael gets me a cup of coffee, and finishes to convince me to report Jordan. He helps me with all the paperwork, and when I leave the station, I feel lighter, like a heavy burden getting off of me.
