“You seem happy,” Lucy, another colleague, tells me with a smile. “You were so serious and gloomy this morning, I don’t know what happened but you see all better now.”
I smile to her but I have to agree with her. This morning I was so scared and concerned that I burried myself in my work, without actually getting any work done, not able to concentrate. But this afternoon, thanks to Mickael, I feel so much better and safer, that I can smile and laugh with my colleagues.
“Leila saw her getting out of the building with a man, that definitely is the reason why she is so happy,” another girl from the office tells us.
I feel my cheeks burn up, from embarrassment.
“Oh my god, our new little Jade is already seeing a guy? Who is he?” Lucy urges me.
Lucy is a mother of two, and happily married but in my two weeks of working, I can already tell that she is the gossip teller of the open space.
“It’s not like that!” I try to cover up but it just looks like lame excuses.
“You must mean Mickael,” Chloe says, getting back to her desk with her hot coffee. She smirks at me. “You like him? I mean, he is handsome. And single,” she adds wile putting her hand on her hands, staring at me with her smirk.
“It’s not like that,” I repeat, looking down on my papers but fail to look serious.
“Don’t worry, he actually has a brain, in contrary of his brother, Logan. He is smart, has a good position, and he is the complete opposite of Logan,” Chloe insists.
I look at her, and burst out laughing, followed by the girls.
“I get it, I get it,” I reply to her, drying a tear from my eyes from my laugh.
“I’ll organize a little something so you can see him again,” Chloe says with a wink.
My desk phone starts to ring, a call from the front desk, but the number changes to an unknown one, meaning she has already transfer the call.
“Please Chloe, don’t make it weird,” I tell her with a laugh while I pick up the phone.
“Sheriton’s law firm, this is Jade’s speaking, how may I assist you” I reply with a happy tone.
I have no answer from the other part, and wonder if it is a mistake, before remembering that the call came first from the front desk so someone must have introduced themselves.
I was about to repeat, in case if my correspondent did not hear me, but I stop when I hear a breathing on the other side of the line. Something feels weird.
“Hello?” I try with less confidence, having a very bad feeling from this call.
I hear a chuckle from the other side, and even though it is not mean or anything bad, it sends chill down my spine.
“Who is this?” I ask and curse my own voice for shivering mid-sentence.
I hear another long breath, but no answer from the other side.
“Jordan?” I ask, not knowing how it could be him or how I could recognize him, but having a feeling that it is definitely him.
“Hello, love,” he replies with a chuckle, and I know it’s him.
“What do you want?” I ask, feeling another shiver of fear.
“I want nothing, love. I thought you may, that’s why I called you,” he replies with his deep voice.
I cannot hear anything else, it’s like I’m hypnotized by this voice. No, actually even before, when all I could hear was his breath. It’s like he is taking so much room that nothing else can be there.
I don’t know what he means, and look up at my colleagues who stopped doing anything, looking at me, concerned.
“There was easier way to contact me, you know?” he continues, sending another chill down my spine.
I see Chloe mouthing hung up to me, and I look at the phone holder.
“Don’t you think about hanging up on me, Jade,” he says as he is reading my mind. “Other wise I’ll have to find other way to talk to you, like maybe come to that office of yours. Or directly to your apartment?” he continues with a chuckle.
“What do you want?” I repeat with more confidence in my voice.
“I told you already, nothing. But you have went out of your way to contact me, so I am just responding to your call.”
I look at the phone holder, confused. He was the one calling me.
“Getting a complain filled against me, no girl went to this extend for me to contact them back, you must have really missed me,” he continues since I stay silent.
I freeze, realizing that he is pissed. They had told me at the station, that no one dared to go against them but Mickael’s words reassured me that he will protect me. But I guess there must have been a good reason no one went against him.
“You know, you didn’t have to do that much but I’m flattered. You didn’t forget me.”
How could I forget him after all that had happened.
“I wanted to talk to you as well, you know?” he continues while I stay silent. “But not on the phone, I want to see you….” He doesn’t finish his sentence, like he is thinking. “Let’s meet after your work tonight.”
I tilt, tonight? I thought I would have time to warn Mickael and the police but I won’t be able to see him. I breath out to calm me down, knowing I can still call them.
“I’ll pick you up.”
My breath becomes shallow, and I look at Chloe with horror.
“Oh, and Jade?” he asks to make sure I concentrate on him. “Don’t even think about contacting Mickael or the police. I’ll know, and it won’t end pretty.”
Just after his last word, I hear the biping sound informing me that my correspondent had hung up the call.
