Selinas (POV)
All i remember from my childhood is blurred faces and immense amounts of fear. I couldn’t ever remember what i was afraid of just that i was always moving. I’ve never been in the same place longer than a year and my mother never told me why, just that it was important we kept moving. So to find out at 16 that i grew a big fat scaly tail and looked like a murderous version of Ariel was beyond me. I remember my first shift id gone swimming with friends and it was awful the pain was unbearable but their reactions were worse, people calling you a monster and screaming for me to be hunted down and killed. Id never even heard of a Siren before that day but when i came home crying and panicking to my mother she sat me down and told me how special i was and to never loose my spirit. She always had a comforting presence about her and never made me feel different or ugly she told me that most shifts happen on your 16th birthday thats also when you can find your mate, if you were lucky enough to have one. Mother also said Sirens don’t usually have mates we’re solitary creatures, but i always wanted to find a man to sweep me off my feet. I remember asking her if she was a siren too. She looked at me with her dark brown almost obsidian colored eyes, eyes that i inherited myself she stared back at me in silence for awhile.
“Yes darling, I’m a siren too. But we must keep our existence unknown.” She said in her melodic sweet voice. “Sirens are one of the rarest supernatural species Selina, no one is to know what you are.” She frowned down at me and grabbed her long chestnut colored hair and put it in a bun.
“But why momma?”
“Because honey, people fear those of the unknown” she said sadly. I still am haunted by those words to this day. I wished id heeded her words better.
