The Fire Warrior

724 Words
The next day at Westbrook Academy, Pyra and Lena were inseparable. They walked together through the crowded hallways, shared lunch under the large oak tree in the courtyard, and even studied together in the library, books piled high around them. “Did you finish the math homework?” Lena asked, flipping through her notebook. Pyra grinned. “Already done. Want me to show you a faster method?” Lena’s eyes widened. “You’re amazing… I never would have thought of that!” Pyra laughed softly. “You just need a little practice. I can help.” By now, Pyra’s influence on Lena had begun to shine. Lena’s confidence grew, her grades improved, and her own intelligence became more noticeable. But the high-class girls were watching, and they weren’t happy. “Why is she always with that… nobody?” Madeline huffed, glaring from across the courtyard. “She’s taking Pyra away from us again,” whispered Bianca. “I can’t believe she ignores our plans.” Madeline crossed her arms, plotting. “We’ll fix that. Just wait.” Meanwhile, Pyra didn’t notice any of the scheming. She was too busy enjoying her time with Lena. And by now, she had become the second most admired girl in school, right after Madeline herself. Her beauty was striking. Hair like a flicker of crimson, eyes that seemed to glow with hidden fire, and a presence that commanded attention without her even trying. Lena had felt it the first day she met Pyra. She had almost been intimidated. But as time passed, she realized Pyra wasn’t jealous, wasn’t arrogant, and was humble despite her brilliance. Even in class, Pyra astonished everyone. “Pyra, can you answer this question?” the teacher asked, pointing to a complex problem on the board. Pyra stepped forward calmly. “Yes. The solution involves applying the secondary theorem, and if we consider the variable in this context…” By the time she finished, even the teacher blinked in surprise. “That’s… impressive,” he admitted. Her classmates whispered among themselves. Some were curious, some jealous, but all were intrigued by the mysterious red-haired girl. --- One afternoon, after school, Pyra and Lena walked down the quiet street toward home. The sun was dipping behind the rooftops, casting long shadows on the pavement. “Do you think the math test tomorrow will be hard?” Lena asked. “I don’t know,” Pyra replied with a shrug. “But we’ll figure it out together.” Suddenly, a man stepped out from behind a lamppost, blocking their path. He was tall, with a cloak that swirled in the breeze, and eyes that seemed to pierce straight through Pyra. “Excuse me,” he said, his voice low but urgent. “Are you Pyra?” Pyra stopped in her tracks. “Yes… who wants to know?” The man’s eyes widened as he took a careful step closer. “You… you look so much like her.” “Like who?” Pyra asked cautiously, exchanging a worried glance with Lena. The man lowered his hood slightly, revealing striking, sharp features. “Your mother. She was… extraordinary. And you… you have a great destiny. You are the Fire Warrior.” Pyra blinked, taken aback. She exchanged a glance with Lena. “Did he just call me… a Fire Warrior?” she whispered. Lena shook her head. “Pyra… I think he’s crazy. Let’s just go.” Pyra hesitated, studying the man’s eyes. There was intensity there, something that felt strangely real, but she trusted Lena. “Alright,” she said, gripping Lena’s hand. “Let’s go home.” As they walked away, the man called after them, but they didn’t look back. “I can’t believe that just happened,” Lena muttered, shaking her head. “Who even talks like that?” Pyra’s hands tingled slightly, a strange warmth rising from within her. She didn’t know why, but something deep inside her stirred, as if the man’s words had unlocked a part of her she hadn’t felt before. “Maybe… maybe he wasn’t entirely crazy,” Pyra said softly, almost to herself. Lena looked at her curiously. “What do you mean?” Pyra didn’t answer. She simply kept walking, a fire building quietly in her chest—one that she didn’t yet understand, but would soon.
