First Day at Westbrook Academy

It was finally time for Pyra to go to school. Louise was overpampering her so much that Ken had to roll his eyes. “She’s going to be fine, Louise,” he said, buckling Pyra into the car. Louise huffed. “Fine? She’s my daughter! I can’t just let her face the world alone!” Pyra giggled from the backseat, tugging at her backpack straps. “Mom, I’ll be okay!” After a quick bath, Pyra was dressed in her school uniform—crisp white shirt, navy skirt, polished shoes. She slung her bag over her shoulder and followed Louise and Ken to the SUV. The drive to school was quiet, but Louise kept glancing at her in the rearview mirror. “You remember everything I told you, right? About your hair?” she asked. Pyra nodded, frowning slightly. “Yes… I dyed it red.” Ken smiled faintly. “You’ve got nothing to worry about. Just be yourself.” --- Westbrook Academy was unlike anything Pyra had ever seen. The school’s grand entrance gleamed under the morning sun. Ivy crawled along the walls of the tall, stone buildings, and the large courtyard was filled with students laughing and walking in groups. Majestic fountains lined the paths, and the flagpoles swayed gently in the breeze. Pyra stepped out of the car and stared in awe. She had never seen so many people her age in one place. Louise bent down and kissed her on the cheek. “Have a wonderful day, my darling.” Pyra smiled, hugged them both, and turned toward the main building. Louise and Ken waved as they drove away, leaving Pyra standing alone. --- She pushed her way through the crowded hallways, her heart beating fast. At the main office, Principal Margaret Halloway greeted her warmly. “You must be Pyra Foster,” she said with a gentle smile. “Welcome to Westbrook Academy. We’re glad to have you.” Pyra returned the smile nervously. “I’ll show you your schedule and class,” the principal continued, handing her a neatly folded paper. Pyra walked down the hallway, glancing at classrooms, laughing students, and posters announcing upcoming events. Her stomach fluttered with excitement. When she entered her first class, all eyes turned toward her. There were the high-class girls: Selena, Vivienne, Aria, Bianca, and Isabella, led by Madeline. Their whispered murmurs were impossible to ignore. Among the boys, there were: Derek, Lucas, Ethan, Gabriel, and Theo, led by Nathaniel, who looked equally intrigued. And then there was her teacher, who paused mid-step, eyes widening slightly at Pyra’s hair. It wasn’t just the color. It was the way her red hair seemed to shimmer under the classroom lights. It was beautiful… breathtaking. Pyra felt uncomfortable under all the attention. She looked around and noticed a girl sitting alone near the window. Her name was Lena. Pyra slid into the seat beside her. “Hi,” she whispered. Lena looked up, surprised. “Hi.” The teacher cleared his throat. “New student, please introduce yourself.” Pyra stood, heart pounding. “I’m Pyra Foster. Nice to meet you all.” After her introduction, the teacher continued the lesson, but Pyra leaned toward Lena, asking quietly about classes, schedules, and favorite subjects. By the end of the period, they were chatting comfortably. A new friendship had begun. --- During lunch, the high-class girls approached. “Don’t talk to… people like her,” Madeline sneered, pointing at Lena. Pyra’s eyes narrowed. “She’s my friend. And you will respect that.” Madeline smirked, studying Pyra’s hair with a mixture of curiosity and jealousy. “Your hair… it’s… incredible,” Madeline admitted, trying not to sound envious. Pyra hesitated. “I… dyed it.” Madeline blinked. “Oh… well, I like it. Actually, I want you at our party tonight.” Pyra tilted her head. “I won’t go without my friend.” A hush fell over the girls. One of Madeline’s followers whispered in her ear. “They want her for the fashion show team… and with her, we’ll win.” Madeline’s expression softened. “Fine. You and your friend are invited.” The girls walked away. Pyra turned to Lena, grinning. “Looks like we have a party to go to.” --- That evening, back at the Foster home, Louise and Ken asked eagerly about her first day. “It was amazing!” Pyra exclaimed, bouncing on the balls of her feet. “I made a friend—Lena! And they invited us to a party tonight!” Louise and Ken exchanged glances. “No,” Louise said firmly. Pyra frowned. “What? Why not?” “It’s not safe,” Ken said calmly. “You need to stay home tonight.” Pyra pouted. “But it’s a party!” “No,” Louise repeated. Pyra’s frustration boiled over. She slammed her bedroom door. The impact sent a chair flying. Suddenly, flames leapt from the chair, dancing in the air as if alive. Ken quickly grabbed a bucket of water and poured it over the chair, quenching the fire. Louise’s eyes were wide. “This is exactly why we can’t let her out!” Ken rubbed the back of his neck. “She doesn’t even know she has powers…” Louise nodded. “For her safety… we leave it at that.” Upstairs, Pyra sat on her bed, cheeks flushed, still angry but also puzzled by the strange warmth she felt in her hands. She didn’t understand it yet, but something deep inside her was awakening. Something powerful. Something dangerous.
