By the time I made it to the ER, Eddie was in a room and hooked up to more machines than seemed sane. They beeped, but nothing alarmed, so I took it as a good sign. Eddie looked like he was sleeping, so I sat in a chair and stared at him.
A nurse came in shortly after I arrived and introduced herself as Bonnie.
“How’s he doing?” I asked her.
“So far, so good.”
I noticed the Fall Risk band on his wrist. “Why is he a fall risk?”
“He was unsteady when he came in. The paramedics said his walk to the door at home was uneven. It could be from his age, but just in case, we put that on there. It only means he’s not allowed to be up and walking without being supervised.”
“Do you know what’s going on yet?”
She shook her head. “Not yet. The doctor has tests ordered. There’s no sign of a st
