CHAPTER SIXTEEN As she cried on the daybed in the garden that night, Lydia heard a noise in the flowers. Jonathan came out, standing in the light. “Are you all right?” She wiped her eyes, sniffing. “Leave me alone.” “You weren’t at dinner.” He sat beside her, the soft mattress bending from his weight. “Don’t cry.” “Get away from me.” She sat up, hugging her knees to her chest. “I hate it here.
