Teo proceeded to his room and Mosi washed the knife, glasses, and squeezer. After he finished and made sure the kitchen was clean he went to his room.
He remembered that the first step was to enter a meditative state of mind. He had never meditated so he wasn’t sure he would be able to do it correctly. However Elisa had said that he shouldn’t worry, just sitting down in a determined position, closing his eyes, emptying his mind, and doing the exercises would surely be enough.
He followed those instructions and started with the first exercise which was breathing quickly in succession 4 times and then breathing slowly and deeply once. He had to repeat this 108 and times.
He noticed that the hardest part was keeping count. But keeping count actually helped him from letting his mind wander and think other things. During the exercise he lost count a couple of times but just kept going from the last number he remembered. Even if it wouldn’t be exactly 108 at the end it would be close enough.
After he finished the first exercise he started with the second one which was basically the same thing but the other way around. 4 slow and deep breaths and 1 very quick and forceful at the end. This again had to be repeated 108 times. Having had practiced with the previous one he found out that counting was easier this time around. He still lost count a couple of times but it didn’t happen so often.
When he finished both exercises he exited his room and found out that dawn had arrived. He went to the kitchen and found out his grandma was sitting in the dining table organizing some books.
“Good morning Mosi! Have you finished the morning exercises?”
“Good morning grandma, yes I have. Has Teo come out already? He started a bit earlier than me.”
“He hasn’t come out yet but it won’t be long until he is finished. How about helping me set up everything we need in the garden?”
“Sure thing, let’s go.”
“Ok!”
Elisa stood up and they walked out the house and to the garden. There they cleaned up a bit removing rocks and sticks. While they were preparing the lawn for the next step of their morning practice Teo came out.
“I didn’t find you anywhere! It took me some time to realize you must have gone outside already. Am I late?”
“Good morning Teo, no you aren't late. You are just in time actually.”
“Good morning grandma! Awesome! I’ve never done yoga I’m excited to try it.”
“I’m glad you are excited. Yoga and especially Surya is a practice that has been forgotten by mankind. Even if the postures are remembered, humans have forgotten that we are supposed to do this every single morning. Just as you say good morning to me when you see me, the same should be done to the Sun when he emerges.”
Elisa took out 3 yoga mats from her bag and gave one to each of the brothers. After giving them their mats she proceeded to place hers in front and facing them so as to be able to guide them through it. She told them where to be and how much distance to keep from one another.
After this, for the first time since they had met their grandma, she removed her magic bag and placed it close by, right beside her mat.
“As I told you yesterday, our sun has 12 frequencies. Every morning we greet our Sun by practicing these 12 postures that resonate with these 12 frequencies. This way we are, in a sense, absorbing these frequencies into our bodies. All things aside, the Sun values to be taking into consideration. Nowadays most people ignore this, so the few that practice it receive special attention from our ruling star.”
“What do you mean by special attention grandma? Does he help or influence our cultivation?” asked Teo who wanted to advance as quickly as possible.
“Well, in time you’ll get to see what I mean. However an example could be that even if the day began very cloudy and the sun is covered up by clouds he’ll shine for you at least for a couple of seconds to greet you just as you’re greeting him by practicing these postures.”
Elisa guided them through the first set very slowly, telling them when to breathe in, when to hold their breath, and when to breathe out. She did this for the first three rounds and then paused to speak to the brothers before going on.
“How is it boys? Getting the hang of it? Ready to do it a little bit faster without so much guidance?”
“This is very tiring grandma! I’m sweating as if I had ran 10 laps or more around the school! It’s not very hard, I think I got the hang of it but I feel all my body screaming! You said we need to this 12 times?!”
“Come on Teo! This isn’t tiring at all! You just need to get used to it! Besides, didn’t you say that you wanted to learn quickly and become the best disciple ever? This is a fundamental step to achieve that! Mosi, how do you feel?”
“I feel awesome, this is invigorating! I don’t feel tired at all, if anything I feel energized every time we finish a cycle. I’m ready to keep going.”
“Ok then! Let’s do the 9 cycles we have left in one go. This shouldn’t be stopped or interrupted. However since it was your first time I thought it best to ask if you were ready after the first couple rounds.”
They kept going this time without talking. Since the brothers had said that they got the hang of it Elisa didn’t tell when to breathe trusting that they would do it correctly. After finishing all 12 cycles they sat down facing the sun.
“Now we will do they last part of Surya which is some breathing exercises to balance the energies in our bodies and we’ll also watch the sun while we do this. You may squint your eyes if you feel the need. Don’t force it since you have never done this before.”
“Isn’t watching the sun directly very harmful for the eyesight?”
“That’s what they teach in school Mosi, after everything we talked yesterday do you still think the things they teach at school are accurate? It’s true that besides early in the morning and late in the afternoon it can be very harmful and damaging. But at specific times during the day and after doing the postures and breathing exercises we are doing it isn’t dangerous at all. It’s just the final step in greeting our Sun.”
“This breathing exercises are to balance out the masculine and feminine energies in our bodies. You’ll need to place your right hand covering one of your nostrils when breathing in and out and alternating between them. It’s also important to place your middle finger between your eyes in your forehead while doing this.”
Elisa demonstrated how to place the hands over their faces without covering their eyes which would allow them to glint at the sun while doing this.
“We’ll breathe in, hold, and breathe out. Afterwards we’ll repeat the same procedure the other way around. We begin breathing in from the left nostril, holding, breathing out from the right nostril and then we breathe in through the right nostril, hold and breathe out through the left one. When you’re holding the breath inside close your eyes. The rest of the time have them open, even if it’s just a tiny little bit, watching the sun.”
After giving them a clear set of instructions and demonstrations they began. It still was early in the morning. They would do this and a couple more breathing exercises for around half an hour while basking in the sunlight.
Before finishing the first exercises though Teo couldn’t help but get overly excited. So excited that he had to stop for a bit.
