Break In, Break Out

It was 2:00 a.m. and I was wide awake, staring at the ceiling, with an uncomfortable craving for blood. I decided to concentrate on other things to keep my craving from growing. I thought about the decisions that led me here. Why was I so desperate to run away and put my life in danger. Was it worth it? All I really wanted was freedom. Now I want blood. My concentration was soon interrupted by a loud noise that caused the room to shake. Very soon after that, I heard a siren go off followed by screams of panic and terror. I had no idea what was happening on the other side of my door, but I did not want to find out. I began fighting to break out of the restraints. I felt myself growing stronger as I ripped out of them. Was this another thing that came with the virus? Immediately after I freed myself of the restraints, the door flew open. I was meet by a tall slim man with dark circles under his eyes. He had tan yet pale skin and fuzzy locs that swept past his shoulders. He studied me as if he was looking for something. His eyes were a dark bloody red. After an awkward silence he gave me a half fang grin. “Looks like your free to go.” He hissed at me and returned to the halls that were filled with chaos. I didn't want to hurt anyone. Now that I had the virus, I was unsure what I could be capable of. I stared out into the hall in horror watching the infected attack the nurses and doctors. I felt the urge to join them which terrified me even more. I had to fight this. I didn't want to be a monster. I rushed to the door and slammed it shut. I hid in a corner and waited out the attack, fighting back the intense urge. A few minutes passed by and the screams of chaos started to fade out till it was quiet. There was a sound of a thud on the other side of the door. The door suddenly swung open revealing another tall dark stranger on the other side. By the intense red glow in his eyes, I knew he was also infected, and had been for a while. His skin looked almost bronze and his frame was large and muscular. He wore a full camouflage outfit. His eyes fell on me in a weird gaze. He then lifted his hands up, to show me he meant no harm. “Hello, I see you must be new to this.” He said as he cautiously approached me. “I want to help you.” He continued as he slowly reached into his duffel bag. He kept his eyes on me as he lifted a pack of red liquid out of his bag. It was blood, from the hospital. He offered it to me but all I could do was stare at it. It was clear he had stolen this from the hospital. “Here let me help you out a bit.” He said as he pulled a small knife out of his pocket. “You seem pretty strong for a new comer,” as he spoke he tore a tiny hole in the bag letting out a familiar aroma. “But if you don't drink this you wont survive much longer.” He offered me the bag again and this time it seemed irresistible. My throat started to burn and my nose was filled with the sweet smell. I took the bag and consumed it like a capri sun without the straw. I was so caught up in the moment that I forgot about the man. I glanced up and he was still there. He had backed away but he was still watching me. I finished the pack quickly. “Good,” He started to talk again. “Now that you've had some sustenance, we can go.” As he spoke he slowly walked back over to me. I stayed in the corner. “Go?” I was confused. Where was he taking me? “I don't know you.” I added. He gave me a friendly fanged grin. “I'm sorry, my name is Alex.” He said. “I know this is all new and strange for you but, you're not safe here. Your best chance at survival is coming with me, unless you liked being strapped to the bed.” He continued as he glanced at the bed. His eyes then focused on me as he moved closer and extended his hand to help me up. I looked at the bed then back at him. I couldn't help but stare into the iris of his eyes which were vivid red. Did my eyes look like that now? I took his hand and he pulled me up to my feet. “Terra” I told him as I stood. He gave me a friendly grin. “Hello Terra.” He said in a warm tone. I suddenly felt a chill run up my back. That's when I remembered that I only had a hospital gown on. I didn't see my clothes anywhere in the room. I tugged on the gown to make sure I was covered. Alex removed his jacket and placed it over my shoulders. “Thanks.” I told him as I tried to avoid staring at his biceps. He looked even more intimidating without the jacket. “No problem, now you need some shoes.” He replied then looked down at my feet. I was wearing the hospital socks. Alex swiftly exited the room and within seconds returned with some sneakers that had small blood stains on them. “You look like you're about a seven.” His guess was spot on. I nodded in awe as I took the shoes from him. “I use to work in a shoe store.” He said. I tied up the laces and buttoned up the jacket. “Are you ready?” Alex asked. “Yea.” I replied. “Good, follow me.” He spoke calmly as he exited the room. I stayed close behind him. As we moved down the hall towards the exit, I was stopped. I screamed in shock looking back to see my ankle was in the grasp of the nurse from my room. He had survived and was he trying to stop me. Alex swiftly moved in between me and the nurse removing his hand from my ankle. “Please, you don't understand.” I heard the nurse cry. Alex kneeled down close to the nurse placing his hand on his neck carefully. “I understand completely.” I heard Alex whisper to the nurse before the sound of a snap. The nurses body become lifeless. I watched as Alex pulled out his knife and a flask. He was collecting the nurses blood. When he finished he got up put the flask in his pocket and licked the knife clean before putting it away. “Sorry about that, but I couldn't let that go to waste.” He said in a satisfied grin. Then he grabbed me suddenly and lifted me onto his back. “Please excuse me, but I want to make sure you don't get grabbed again.” Alex said as he then moved quickly towards the exit. He kicked the door down, flew down fights of stairs and left the hospital from a side exit. There were flashing lights and sirens surrounding the building. “We have to stay low.” Alex whispered as he put me down. We managed to carefully slip pass the chaos without being noticed. “Now what?” I asked. “Are you able to run?” He asked back. I didn't know but I would try. I nodded to him and just like that, he darted off. He was fast, but as I chased after him, I could feel a change in my body. I felt myself move faster. Soon I was right on Alex's heels. I could not believe this was capable. It seemed like a few minutes of running but we had traveled so far. Alex stopped suddenly causing me to trip over myself trying to stop with him. “We should be safe now.” He said as he walked along small path. I followed him quietly. We were in the thick of the forest. It was dark but I could see clearly. It was quiet but I could hear every footstep Alex and I made.
