Infected
I woke up in a hospital bed. Strange. I didn't remember how I got here. The room was bare. There was a bathroom in the room but the door was removed. A T.V. was hooked to the wall, but I couldn't find the remote. I was hooked to multiple IVs with blood transfusions. Had I lost that much blood? How long was I out? I needed to remember what happened. All I could remember was trying to run away. I was running away from home, but I found myself having to run for my life shortly after. That must have been why I was here. What ever was chasing me, it caught me, but somehow, I managed to get here. Who saved me? “You're awake.” I heard a male voice from the door. I turned to see a nurse standing at the door. I was still in shock, I couldn't speak. All I could do was smile and nod. “I hope we were able to stop the virus on time.” The nurse said making his way over to me. Virus! I forgot about the virus. That's what was chasing me. That's what attacked me. The nurse was checking my vitals at the time. He was very cautious. He wore a long sleeve turtle neck under his scrubs and hard rubber gloves covered his hands and wrists. “What were you doing out past curfew without protection?” He said in a concerned tone. I knew he was going to ask me who I was and where I'm from. I would have to go back home. I would have to explain to my parents why I was out past the curfew. I looked away from him, but that only made him more curious. I knew it was dangerous to leave but I couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to run away and start over. I just thought I could make it to my friends house before dark. Then I could figure things out after that. I had been stuck in the house with my family for two years because of this weird virus. It all started with some unexplained outbreak that happened at a hospital in Canada. It was given the name, Vampire Virus, or Fang Virus because the anyone infected became vampire like. It soon became a global pandemic. The Fang virus spread mostly during the night because the infected skin became sensitive to direct sunlight. One bite from someone with the virus could expose you to the virus or kill you. I see why they were giving me transfusions, and why the nurse was so concerned. The infected craved blood. I remember feeling a sharp pain on the back of my neck when I was attacked. I couldn't discern whether I was stabbed or bitten. “I see you may still be traumatized. I'll give you some time. But for safety reasons, we must restrain you until we are sure you will not become a threat.” He pulled heavy restraints out from the bed which caused me to panic and sit up. He quickly backed away. I had a feeling he knew it was too late for me. “Ma'am, I'm sorry, but this virus is very dangerous. If you have been exposed we need to keep you held down to stop you from doing something you don't want to do.” He was afraid of me. I was afraid too. He tried to restrain me again and I fought to jump out the bed. He jumped back checking himself. “Okay, I get it.” He gave up on restraining me. “But I will have to lock you in this room. I'm sorry.” He walked away to the door. I scrambled off the bed dragging the iv poles with me. “Wait, please! How long do I have to be here?” I yelled desperately. He closed the door just before I reached it. I heard it lock from the other side. A panic suddenly came over me. I tried to turn the door open but it would not budge. My IV's were getting tangled and my panic turned to frustration. I ripped the needles out of my veins sending sharp pains through my skin. The blood from the IV and my veins spilled onto the floor. My panic turned to fear as the once off white floor turned to a bloody red. I suddenly heard a loud beeping noise and realized I may have set off some alarm when I ripped out the IVs. Before I could blink the room was full of nurses covered head to toe in protective gear. They grabbed me and forcefully strapped me down to the bed. Another nurse rushed in frantically cleaning the blood off me and then the floor. “This is going to set the whole floor off.”She mumbled. “Make sure all of the patients are restrained. ” Another nurse called out. They had successfully strapped me down and I could not move. All I could do was think about what that nurse said. I didn't understand what they meant until I caught a whiff of something sweet. As the nurses left I tried to track down the sweet scent I was smelling. I looked down to see a red stain on my gown. It was the blood. I had never smelled something so intoxicating. Was this apart of the virus? Did this mean, I was infected? My nostrils burned intensively. The smell of blood made me thirsty. I had to taste it. I managed to stretch my neck down just enough to get to it. It tasted just as good as it smelled. I realized that I was bitten and not stabbed. I had been exposed, and I was infected.
