The Rejection

223 Words
The Great Hall of the Black Moon Pack reeked of pine and blood. Eighteen candles burned for my eighteenth birthday. Eighteen pairs of eyes watched me walk to the center of the circle. Alpha Darius stood on the dais. My mate. My whole world for three years. His silver eyes were cold. No warmth. No love. “Lyra Moore,” his voice boomed across the silent pack. “I, Alpha Darius of the Black Moon Pack, reject you as my mate and future Luna.” My knees hit the stone floor. Gasps. Whispers. Laughter. The mate bond between us snapped. It felt like someone ripped my soul in half with bare hands. Pain exploded in my chest. I couldn’t breathe. Darius didn’t even flinch. “You are weak. An Omega. Unfit to stand beside me.” He turned to the crowd and raised his hand. “I claim Selena Vance as my mate.” Selena. His Beta’s daughter. Perfect. Strong. Not broken like me. She walked to him and took his hand. Smiling. I was still on the floor, choking on air that wouldn’t come. Beta Vance stepped forward. “Leave. Now, filth. Before I have you whipped.” So I ran. I ran past the pack walls. Past the territory line. Past everything I knew. I didn’t stop running for three years.
