I made it to the kitchens before my hands stopped shaking. Darius followed me. Of course he did. “Rae.” I didn’t turn. I scrubbed a pot harder than I needed to. “Alpha Kade said all Omegas are off-limits after curfew. Leave.” “I’m not leaving without you.” His footsteps came closer. My wolf whined. I hated her. Three years I built these walls. One look from him and they cracked. “Why now?” I asked. My voice was ice. “You had Selena. You had your perfect Luna.” “She’s dead,” he said. The pot slipped from my hands. It crashed. I turned slow. “What?” “Rogue attack. Two weeks ago.” His silver eyes were hollow. “The bond broke when she died. And it came back. To you.” So that’s it. I wasn’t chosen. I was the backup. Laughter bubbled out of me. Bitter. “How convenient.” “Don’t,” he stepped closer. “I was cruel. I was young. I thought I was protecting the pack by choosing strength over—” “Over me?” I finished. “Save it.” I grabbed a towel and walked past him. “Here’s my offer, Alpha. You want your mate back? Earn her. Because the Omega you threw away is gone.” I left him standing in the kitchens. My wolf howled the whole way to my room.
