Nursery Rivalries
On the 10th of April, in 2002. Little Sprouts Preschool The classroom was alive, with the sounds of children singing nursery rhymes and the occasional clatter of toys hitting the ground amidst the sunlight streaming through drawings, on the windowsill that lit up the room with a warm glow.I found myself at the center of it all with my arms folded across my chest and my pigtails bouncing energetically as I moved around the space. "I'm not keen, on sharing!" I declared firmly while standing by the pile of blocks in my dress that swayed dramatically with each movement. Sharing seemed overhyped to me; especially when it involved something I really desired. I noticed him at that moment. A boy, with brown hair seated calmly at the table and methodically stacking blocks to create a tall structure with great focus and dedication as if nothing else, around mattered to him in that moment. The tower he was building continued to rise with each block added to it. A masterpiece taking shape before my eyes while he remained unaware of the impending tantrum brewing nearby. My vibrant blue eyes narrowed as I felt the urge to bring it down a notch. Not because it was remarkable but also because there was something, about his composed attitude that got under my skin.It seemed like he believed his tower surpassed anything others could create.. I couldn't just sit back and accept that. Approaching him with steps and the sound of my shoes echoing on the floor tiles beneath me I boldly stated my desire to bring it down." He didn't react at looked up at me with his green eyes so calm and unwavering. "I created that " he stated confidently and evenly in a way that almost challenged me to question it. His defiant stare did nothing to sway my determination as I stood there with fists. "I don't care " I retorted firmly " I'm going to take it down " "Don't " he said with determination, in his voice this time around while his tiny hands held onto the towers base as though he could shield it from my anger about to be unleashed. I never shied away, from a challenge. Acted swiftly without hesitation by sweeping my arm across the table to make the blocks fall to the floor in a satisfying jumble of disorder that filled the room with noise and briefly quieted our classmates conversations. He was taken aback as his eyes widened in disbelief for a moment which made me briefly feel a pang of guilt before being overwhelmed, by a sense of pride and triumph knowing that I had emerged victorious in the end. The quiet didn't linger for long before Mrs.Patel approached us swiftly in her flowing sari."Oh Alexandra!" she exclaimed with both surprise and frustration evident in her tone."What have you done?"she questioned,"We should respect the effort of others and not destroy their work." "I folded my arms more and pouted slightly as I spoke up; "It didn't really sit well with m " I admitted hesitantly. Deep down I was quite taken with his tower. Perhaps even a tad envious." The young boy rose to his feet with a pace and straightened out his overalls as if tidying away specks of dust on them; his expression remained composed while his gaze revealed a tale of unwavering resolve shining through his eyes—a wordless pledge that he would remember this moment forevermore. " I enjoyed it " he remarked calmly with a hint of provocation, in his tone. Mrs Patel crouched down next, to me with a gaze attempting to make eye contact, with me."Alexandra " she spoke gently,"Its important to appreciate the efforts of others work." "Shall I help you discover an activity?" Reluctantly following her lead, with my fists still tightly held together I stole a glance over my shoulder as we walked away. In the distance he was busy reconstruct ing his tower placing each block with attention to detail. Though he didn't meet my gaze I sensed a hint of his irritation lingering in the air. He looked so composed and unbothered that it made me scowl in frustration. Sitting at the coloring station, with crayons scattered around me on the table while holding a piece of paper in my hands made me sneak another peek at him unconsciously. His expression had shifted from anger to curiosity as his green eyes met mine briefly from across the room—a silent question hung between us now; Who was I, to him exactly. This girl who had barged in his space like a whirlwind of chaos disrupting his creation? That moment made me realize something whoever he was this wasn't the end of it not, by a shot. By the time the day was over. It was snack time again. Thats when we ran into each other more. I was enjoying my juice box when he showed up next, to me with his cup of milk. Without a word spoken between us at first. He simply stood there briefly before taking a seat at the table. Even though we were four years old then. There was an unmistakable tension hanging in the air, between us. "Why did you have to bring it down?" he inquired, at last as he broke the quiet that enveloped us. "I. Casually chewed on the straw of my juice box as I nonchalantly replied with a simple 'Because I wanted to.'" "That doesn't justify it " he remarked with a furrowed brow. "It's my justification " I retorted defiantly with a tilt of my head. He gazed at me for a moment as if attempting to understand me before flashing a smirk and commenting with amusement,"You're quite unique." It caught me off guard for a second—I've been labeled bossypants and a chatterbox before but never weird! Should I take offense. Be curious, about it instead? "I replied with a smirk " I responded hesitantly as I struggled to find the words to continue our conversation. "Perhaps " he remarked with a smirk on his face while calmly taking a sip of his milk."However I refrain from causing destruction." He caught my eye with a smirk; I found myself at a loss, for words in that moment of truth he effortlessly pointed out. A mix of frustration and respect swirled within me as he revealed his insight. Since then and onwards afterward that day, at nursery school long ago now when the seed of competition was sown in us two tiny tots forevermore intertwined in a playful battle for supremacy in all things small and significant. From stacking blocks to racing across the playground. Igniting a spirited spectacle that left onlookers puzzled yet entertained as they pondered the nature of this unique bond, between us. Mrs.Patel frequently attempted to intervene. Soon realized that dividing us only escalated the situation.Whenever I was around she appeared to be, in proximity and vice.It felt like an unseen bond linked us pulling us towards each other despite our attempts to distance ourselves. In the years to come I'd reminisce about those days with a blend of fond memories and amazement. I never imagined back then that the reserved boy, with hair and the boisterous girl with lively pigtails would have such a profound impact on each others lives in ways beyond our wildest dreams. However at moment, in time were two determined youngsters engaged in a struggle neither of us was willing to relinquish. Our tale had just started unfolding when we least expected it.
