She saw a familiar face near the gate entrance. She hurriedly approached her and greeted her with a warm smile.
“ Hi Avi, how was your school today?”
“ I am doing great mom. My teacher told me that I was doing great in our class. In fact I got the highest score in our Science Quiz today, " Avi exclaimed.
“ Wow! How great is that. I am always proud of you my daughter. I hope that you continue in doing great in school. You know that we are always proud of you. I love you, Avi”.
“ I love you too, mom," Avi's reply while wrapping her hands around her mother.
Avi excels in his studies at Malana University. She was only known by a few individuals because she was not particularly outgoing. She has a small group of pals that make her happy anytime she is among them. She was the sort of girl you'd always see sitting in a corner, never speaking to you until you made the first move. She is a shy person. Except for the folks with whom she was really close, she dislikes lengthy chats.
Avi and mother walked their way home. It was a daily routine for them. All they do is to enjoy their time together while strolling and sharing stories until they reach their home.
" Mom, have a seat and relax. Don't worry, I'll take care of the housework for you."
"No. It's alright. I can still cook for us tonight. I know that you are also tired today," Avi's mom replied.
"But mom... let me handle this," Avi urged, "I know it's been a long day at work for you as well."
" Thank you so much, Avi. I feel so fortunate to have you."
She had already changed into her home clothes and began cleaning. Avi rummaged through the kitchen cabinets for something to prepare for supper. She was aware that her mother, who works at a laundry shop near their home, was already cash-strapped because she had previously paid all of their utility bills. Only one can of sardines and noodles remained in the cabinet. That would not be enough for a family of six to eat for supper, but it would keep them fed for the night.
After washing the dishes and doing the laundry, Avi headed up to her room, which she shares with her younger sister. It was the only space where she felt at ease and a perfect spot to unwind after a busy day at school. Her room featured bamboo floors and a substantial floor area for the two of them. The ceiling wasn't very high, and the only source of light throughout the night was a gas lamp. They had no choice but to sleep on the floor because there was no bed. It was nearly ten o'clock in the evening, but she couldn't wait to open her school notes and begin studying for her forthcoming tests and doing her assignments. Despite her tiredness and sleepiness, she did not want to fail her lessons, so she stayed up to complete her schoolwork.
" Hello, Avi! Good morning! " Tina yelled Avi from the back.
Avi recognized that cheery familiar voice.
" Hey Tina! How are you? Good morning, as well ," Avi replied with a warm smile. "Come on, let's head to our classroom. Let me help you carry some of your things," Avi added.
Avi and Tina noticed a gathering of students applauding and chanting as they walked down the corridor. Also perplexed as to what it was all about, they took a quick look and saw two people in the midst of the throng holding a banner that said "Can you be my girlfriend?" ”. When the girl answered yes to the proposition, the crowd erupted in applause, and the boy held her warmly. Everyone in the audience was ecstatic to see the two together.
" Avi, take a look! They are also Senior High School students from the other section. They look sweet together, isn’t it? ” Tina exclaimed.
" You're right. How sweet it is to have someone doing things like that for a girl. I mean, you know, it’s rare to experience such things. Especially when nobody likes you," Avi answered.
" Well. I agree to that. You are right. I think that our only job is to praise and appreciate other people's romantic relationships, right?" Tina laughed as she stated this.
Avi felt something deep inside while watching at the joyful couple together. She was thinking to herself that if she was in the same circumstances, that would be such a thoughtful gesture for a guy. She believes that individuals are fortunate when they have someone special who recognizes their value and cheers them up aside from their families. Avi has never been in a romantic relationship. Nobody would dare to do so. She believes she isn't attractive enough to be courted, or that no one likes her for who she is. These ideas were racing through her head, but as a teenager, you sometimes reach to a moment where you start to question these things.
The whole crowd went silent when the guidance counselor of the school went to see what was the commotion was all about. Avi was back into reality. And then, all of a sudden, everyone began hurrying to their classrooms, fearful of being discovered cutting classes. Avi and Tina kept walking till they arrived at their classroom.
" Avi, Avi!" Tina! This way! " Amira exclaimed, gleefully.
“Hi Amira! The most punctual girl in the classroom. Hahaha ” Tina laughed.
" What's taking you guys so long? Did you keep an eye on the proposition in the hallway? Jasmine and I had been anticipating your arrival. Today, we have a lot of schoolwork to complete," Amira stated.
Avi's limited circle of pals grew with the inclusion of Amira and Jasmine. Because she has her own driver, Amira was always on time for school. She was born into a wealthy family. Despite her well-heeled financial situation, she maintained a humble and kind demeanor. She never brags about their fortune, which Avi admires the most. She was a sweet and simple woman. Jasmine, on the other hand, was the gifted one. She can sing and play a variety of musical instruments extremely well. When it came to singing competitions, she was always the school's representative. Finally, there's Tina, who is always cheery. She was the squad's happiest member. Tina was the life of the party, often sharing stories and making everyone laugh out loud.
“ Good morning, class!” Ms. Perez greeted.
Everyone hurriedly go back into their seats. “ Good morning, Ms. Perez! ” the class greeted back.
“Kindly take your seats. Today, I have a very special announcement to make. As you all know that you are one of the graduating batch and your graduation is already fast approaching, ” Ms. Perez said.
The entire room was ecstatic and shouting.
"Having this been said, I wanted you to remain focused on your academics. Your academic ranking can substantially assist you in obtaining scholarships for your college education. Always aim high "Aim for the stars," Ms. Perez said.
Ms. Perez was Avi's favorite teacher among all. She never fails to encourage the class to do something good. She sees the best in every student and unleash their full potential.
As Avi was paying attention to Ms. Perez's words, something bothers her from the inside. She was a bit upset in the back of her mind since she wasn't sure whether she could still enroll in college due to their family situation. Despite the fact that she had previously been given a scholarship till college, she was certain that she would require another due to the expenditures she would incur throughout her college years. She was worried that her mother and father, who works as a carpenter, could find it difficult to allow her to continue her studies. And so, she must also take actions in her own way.
"You know, girls, I'm going to miss you terribly." During our high school years, we were such a great team. While preparing her things for lunch, Jasmine exclaimed, "I can't imagine my life in college without all of you."
"Neither do I. This group was instrumental in helping me get through my senior year of high school. I'm sure we'll be attending separate universities in college. But you know, I'll always adore you gals." Tina added.
"I'm thinking about transferring to another institution next year. My parents wished for me to continue my study in the United States. I know they wanted the best for me, so even if it's difficult for me to start again, I'd have to since it's for the future," Amira remarked with her eyes sorrowful.
" Hello, ladies! There is no need to be concerned about. There is still time for us to get to bond with one other. Let's make the most of the opportunity! Also, we can still communicate with one another! " Avi stated, attempting to cheer up the entire team.
The young ladies hugged one other. They are aware that after high school, they will go their own ways and their lives would be drastically different.
The squad headed to the cafeteria to take their lunch.
"What's for lunch?" Tina said as she grabbed her purse and scanned the cafeteria menu.
"I guess I'll simply have mac and cheese for lunch because I'm not that hungry," Amira said. "How about you, Avi?"
With a smile, Avi answered, "Well, go ahead and fall in line. I brought some lunch with me today." She took out her lunchbox and opened it. It was stuffed with rice and topped with a boiled egg. "See?" Avi said as she showed Amira her meal.
"All right, then, I'll just go and get some sweets and beverages for you," Amira offered.
Avi was extremely fortunate that her friends never made her feel out of place. The group would always share whatever they had with her if she didn't have enough money for lunch or in buying things that is needed for school. They were well aware of Avi's predicament and never criticized her for who she is.
The group
...
“Congratulations, graduates!” the commencement speaker cheerfully said.
The time has arrived and finally they completed already their senior high school years. After the ceremony, everyone was delighted to greet their friends and take pictures with each other. Avi, Jasmine, Tina and Amira went to see each other.
"Guys, you know what? Today, my family has planned a lunch party in a hotel for my graduation celebration. And I'm wondering whether you'd want to come along with me and celebrate with me? There's also a pool in there where we can swim. I'll just tell my mother and father. What are your thoughts? " Amira inquired.
"That would be lovely, but my family has also planned a small get-together at home as well." Tina said, "I'm afraid I won't be able to accompany you."
"I'm the same way. Today, my friends and relatives will gather at our home for a party. Jasmine continued, "I need to get dressed and be there."
"How about you, Avi?" says the Amira. Do you want to accompany me? Don't worry, I'll take you home after the party. What's more, you know what? You are welcome to bring your entire family! It'll be a lot of fun! " Amira remarked pleasantly to Avi.
Avi wanted to be a part of Amira's gathering. But she recognizes that today is a significant occasion, and she wishes to spend it with her family. She only wanted to spend time with her family, despite the fact that she knew there would be no celebration at home.
"I apologize, Amira. She lied when she said, "My mum and dad also arranged something for me." "I wanted to spend this time with them," Avi continued.
"Is that so?" Hmmm. It's all right. I see your point. Perhaps next time. You know what? Let’s just take pictures together. Come on! Say cheese, ladies! ”
…
"Avi, take off your blindfold right now."
Avi was completely oblivious to what was going on and gradually removed the blindfold from her eyes.
"Congratulations, Avi! ”
When Avi took off the blindfold, she noticed her parents and siblings gathered around their little dining table, holding a handwritten banner with congratulations messages. One bottle of soft drink, a bag of bread, and a tray of pancit that her mother had prepared for her were on the table. She couldn't keep her emotions under control. She had not anticipated any sort of party for her graduation. Avi was in tears because she understands that this isn't a spectacular gesture, but her family is so sincere to do such action.
"Thank you, Mom and Dad!" Avi remarked, her eyes welling up with tears and stunned at what she had witnessed.
"Our Avi, I realize that our celebration is nothing in comparison to your sacrifices during your studies, but we wanted you to know that we are incredibly proud of you! Always," Avi's father, Marco, exclaimed as he embraced her daughter.
"No, dad. For me, this is enough of a celebration. All I need is my family. I love all of you! " Avi remarked as she wrapped her arms around her entire family.
