Serene
A normal girl would spend her 19th birthday hanging out with friends, going to 18+ clubs or probably spending time with her boyfriend. That’s not me. My life was already planned out for me. After I graduated from high school, my life immediately began. There was no enjoying it.
“You will behave,” mom told me. “Do not get on his bad side. You will do what he tells you to do.”
Mother guided me out of the house and there standing in our yard were two men. One was an African-American with locs and glowing green eyes. The other was Caucasian with glowing blue eyes. They stood there, staring at my mom and I.
“How are you?” Mother asked them.
“Is this all of her things?” Green eyes asked.
“Yes,” Mother answered.
The dark-skinned male walked over to us and grabbed the bags.
“Follow me,” he told me.
I hesitated.
“Go, now.” She instructed.
“That’s it? No, goodbye or nothing? You’re just going to send me off like this?”
“Do not waste their time.”
She shoved me and I glanced at her with anger. I'd never met a spiteful mother until I was born. My mother wasn’t s**t and I hated her. I slowly walked to the two guys and one of them moved out of my way before he turned and opened the door for me.
“Get in.” He told me.
My heart pounded as I got inside the car. I sighed as I scooted to the middle seat. I turned my attention outside to my mother. She just stared at me like I was a stranger. No remorse for giving me away and not even a smile appeared on her face. One of the men removed a thick envelope from his pocket and handed it to my mother, who took it without asking. Wow. How f*****g pathetic.
The two men got into the car, and it didn’t take long for us to leave from in front of my house.
“Are you hungry, Ma’am?” One of the guys asked me.
“Please don’t call me that,” I told them. “I have a name. It’s Serene.”
“Our boss doesn’t allow that. He wants us to treat you with the utmost respect.”
I sighed. It wasn’t their fault that they had to get me.
“Can I ask what’s going on here?” I asked them.
Mother gave me a bit of information, but not too much.
“Let me introduce myself,” the Caucasian guy said. “My name’s Dorian. This is Zyren. We’re going to be your driver and guards from here on out.”
“Why would I need guards?”
Dorian turned his head to the side.
“Because your fiancé recommends that you have one. He was right on that.”
I squinted at him, but said nothing else. There wasn’t much to really say about the situation.
“Did your mother tell him about him at all?” Zyren spoke for the first time.
“No.”
“Typical.”
The car got silent after that.
“Are we going to the house with her?” Zyren asked Dorian.
Dorian shook his head.
“We’re headed to dinner at Monroe’s.”
Monroe? We didn’t have that in California. Where was I going? A sigh escaped my lips as I leaned against the window pane and glanced outside. I watched as the trees were passing due to the speed of the car. Wherever they were going, they were trying to get me there fast.
“Are you hungry?” Dorian asked me again.
“No, thank you,” I told them. “Is it okay if I take a nap. Today has been really stressful for me.”
“Go ahead. We’ll be in Las Vegas in a few hours.”
I glanced at the back of his head. Las Vegas? I couldn’t even think anymore. My eyelids closed and that was it for me.

“Ma’am, wake up.”
I was nudged awake. My vision was blurry for a few minutes, but as soon as my vision cleared, I was able to see perfectly well. Dorian and Zyren got out of the car and Dorian opened my door. I got out of the car and stood by the car. The streets were lit up and if I was a kid, I would definitely be excited.
“We made it to Las Vegas?” I asked them.
“Yes.”
I turned to the building we were in front of. Monroe was written at the top in cursive lettering. Fancy restaurant? I wondered what they served here. Dorian and Zyren stood in front of me.
“Are you ready?” Zyren asked.
“I’m sorry, yes.” I nodded.
Dorian walked over to me and extended his arm. I grabbed it and was pulled into the restaurant. As we walked inside, the first thing I noticed was the dim lights and music being played. We got to double doors and Zyren opened it for Dorian and I.
The building was nice and packed with a lot of people. However, I noticed that some of the people there had glowing eyes like Zyren and Dorian. Dorian and I walked inside and Zyren came in behind us. We walked to the back of the restaurant where there was another set of doors. Zyren opened that as well, and we all walked through it. In the room was a big round table. First off, the room looked like it was VIP only. The walls were painted brown. There was a bar on the other side of the room. The music was softly played in the room. At the top of the ceiling, there was a chandelier hanging from it. The light wasn’t too bright at all. VIP, scratch that. I gave it too much of a hype.
“Hello sweetheart.”
I was checking out the room and I didn’t acknowledge the people that were sitting around the table. When I glanced at the table, there were 10 pairs of glowing eyes staring back at me.
“I see why Roman had Zyren and Dorian go to get her.” One of the women stated. “You are an absolute baddie.”
I smiled, but said nothing. Zyren walked over to one of the empty chairs and motioned for me to come to it. I went to him and took my seat. Everybody stared at me, and I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. I’ve never been more scared of anything.
“Don’t worry; we’re not here to hurt you,” one of the guys told me. “Your fiancé is running a little bit late. So, we’re here to get to know you first before he does.”
He smiled at me, revealing his sharp canines, sending a chill down my spine. They scared me, and it made me wonder how my fiancé was and if he was just like them.
