Chapter 1

772 Words
Summer in Manhattan was basically dry, uneventful and calm. There was little to worry about, little to care for, and little change in the situation of things. Everything virtually stayed exactly the same. That was the case for 17 year old Alex cross. After losing his mother, everything had fallen apart crashing and it had stayed that way ever since. There had been no change. Much countering the words of his therapist nothing had changed, the pain and anger hadn't gone away, things hadn't gotten better and he had read every book, watched every documentary, listened to every piece of her advice, and as much as it killed him he had taken every damn pill she had prescribed and yet nothing. He wasn't sure it ever would. So after six months of consistent therapy sessions and a week of missing school he decided it was to time to stop hoping for a difference. It was time to return to P.C.A (pacific coast academy of learning for both boarding and day students). Staying home hurt him too much anyway, brought back too many memories, so much to the dismay of his father and aunt who insisted on a few more weeks of dreadful therapy, his bags and suitcases were all packed and he was ready to resume the next day. ........ Alex laid still on his bed lost in his thoughts. His icy blue eyes facing upwards, staring at the ceiling while his right hand was going through his glorious shiny brown hair. The heat was insane so he was putting on a plain pair of light leggings as he laid down shirtless, revealing his muscular abs that glowed a glistering gold as it was continuously struck by Manhattan sun. His face was completely blank, totally void of all feeling and emotion. He was reminiscing a memory of him, his mum and his dad back when the three of them were still together, one of the happiest memories of his life yet he couldn't even smile. His face was expressionless as he thought back to how his mother, beth cross had smeared chocolate cake all over his face, laughing her head off on his 15th birthday. Truthfully at this point in his life he was willing to bet he couldn't smile at any of his memories of his mum even if his life depended on it. Since the funeral they had stopped being memories, they were now reminders. Painful reminders that beth was gone and was never coming back and no starving desperate therapist could convince him otherwise. The beeping coming from his left pocket snapped him out of his thoughts. He drew his hand from his hair and reached for his phone still beeping spewing with texts from concerned family and friends all over the world. He cared for none of them, so as soon as he typed in his pin he deleted everything apart from Jason's. Jason Nova his best friend since kindergarten and technically since birth seeing as they were both born in the same hospitals in the same month. Different days however, beth had given birth to Alex before Jason's mum had given birth to Jason making him a day and a half older than Jason. He took a deep breadth before Reading it. Hey Alex its Jace, can't wait to see you tomorrow. Everyone misses you so pretty much expect a welcome party when you arrive but you didn't hear it from me. P.S don't worry everything's gonna be OK. He read the last sentence three more times carefully going through the words. "No s**t". He thought. If he had a nickel for Every time someone had told him not to worry and that everything's going to be OK with warm cheerful smiles he'd be rich enough not to need school anymore. Thanks Jace, miss you too. Can't wait to leave this prison, see you tomorrow. He took a couple of deep breaths and hit send. He dropped the phone on his bed and switched it off, sparing himself of all other calls and voice mails from people he wasn't ready to speak to yet. He shifted his gaze to the clock a few metres above him that read 8: 30 pm. It was probably time for him to get some sleep. He would need it considering it was at least a six hour drive to coast city. Plus the sooner he went to bed, the sooner he'd wake up which meant the sooner he could leave and with that thought he turned off the light and curled himself up in his blanket drifting off instantly.
