Chapter 015

As the workday neared its end, William felt like he had finally survived his first grueling day. Without Bertha around to chat with and admire, he had absolutely nothing to do. "It seems that little girl won't be coming back this afternoon," William muttered, checking the time. It was almost five. He stretched lazily, planning to take Sophia to a cheap roadside steakhouse he saw earlier. "William!" A familiar voice made him turn around. He was surprised to see Nora standing at the door. "Nora? You're off work already?" "Yes! My supervising doctor left early today, so I'm free too," Nora beamed at him, tilting her head cutely. "I just stopped by Sophia's office. She told me to come get you so we can all have dinner together." "Great! Let's go," William agreed readily, walking with her to the elevator. "By the way," William asked as they walked, "did that hospital director's son bother you today?" "No," Nora smiled. "He doesn't come every day. Usually just every few days. He's so annoying. But since you pretended to be my boyfriend yesterday, he's probably scared off. I don't think he'll pester me anymore." "Silly girl," William chuckled, looking at her sweet smile. How could anyone not like such a lovely girl? Inside the elevator, Nora looked down, remembering the scars she had seen on William's body yesterday. Her heart ached a little. She looked up earnestly. "William, I'm studying rehabilitation therapy. Recently, I've been learning acupuncture and massage. Since you have so many scars, I can give you a massage tonight. It helps fade them." "Really?" William's eyes lit up. "That would be amazing!" Massage? That sounded comfortable. He hadn't expected the girl he saved to be so grateful. William knew his scars wouldn't fade easily, even with professional treatment, but that wasn't the point. The point was getting a massage from a beautiful girl... He agreed without hesitation. "William, how did you get those scars?" Nora asked concernedly. "Can you tell me?" "Got them in the army," William grinned. "I told you I was a soldier, right?" "You did, but you didn't say how you got hurt." Nora was intensely curious about her cousin-in-law. She felt there was more to him than his slacker appearance suggested. He had an air of mystery about him. And that mystery was incredibly attractive. A while later, William, Sophia, and Nora were sitting in the car, deciding where to eat. "William, Do you grasp the concept of "high society"?" Sophia suddenly asked. She had been brewing this thought for a while. It sounded harsh and materialistic, but if it could drive William away, she didn't care. She wasn't that kind of person, but she forced herself to play the part. "I know," William nodded, glancing at her cold eyes. He understood she was trying to find ways to break the engagement. Sophia frowned. "William, if you want to prove we are equals, don't take us to some cheap roadside diner! If we eat, we eat at a proper place!" "How can we do that?" William looked at her in shock. "Wifey, in today's society, we need to be frugal! We can't be wasteful. Do you know how precious money is..." "William is being stingy!" Nora giggled, clearly enjoying the show. "Who said at noon that they wanted to have dinner with me?" Sophia asked, her face smug. She wanted to see him squirm and crush his arrogance. "Otherwise, you can get out of the car now. Nora and I will go eat by ourselves. You don't need to treat us." "Wifey, let me finish! Don't interrupt me," William looked genuinely annoyed. "Although we should be frugal, we should spend when necessary, right? Let's go. Whatever you want to eat, your husband will pay for it!" William thought about it. To woo his wife, he would endure it. Besides, how much could one meal cost? "Fine. Let's go to the five-star hotel ahead! I've been under a lot of stress lately; I want a big steak dinner!" Sophia said coldly, stepping on the gas. She wanted to see if this scoundrel would keep up his facade. Nora clapped her hands, praising William for his generosity. Being praised by a beauty made William happy. If it makes them happy, this meal is worth it. It was peak dinner time at the hotel. All the private rooms were occupied, so they had to sit in the main dining hall. However, this didn't dampen Sophia's enthusiasm for ordering... "This one, this one, this one, and this one... okay, all of these! One of each. Thank you." Sophia ordered over a dozen of the most expensive dishes on the menu without batting an eye. William stared at her, his face twitching. He wasn't heartbroken over the money... he was just annoyed at her attitude. The waiter nodded and left with the menu. "Hey, we can't finish all that food," William said, looking at Sophia with disdain. "So what? Who said they were paying for me? If we can't finish it, I'll pack it up!" Sophia smirked. She loved seeing William's unhappy expression. If William was unhappy, she was happy. She didn't know where this petty joy came from, but he deserved it for being such a jerk. "I said I'd pay for my wife! Are you my wife?" William narrowed his eyes, grinning mischievously at her. Sophia frowned, biting her lip. After a pause, she said, "Yes! Aren't you my fiancé?" "Good! Well said." William clapped his hands, now willing to pay for the meal happily. "Wifey, I feel like we haven't known each other long enough. How about tonight we lie under the stars and... get to know each other intimately?" "What are you saying?!" Sophia hadn't expected him to be so shameless. Nora burst out laughing. "William and Cousin really look like a married couple." "Nora, what did you say?" Sophia grabbed her chopsticks, pretending to hit her. "Miss Sophia! Miss Nora! What a coincidence! Fancy meeting you here." Just as they were bantering, two men walked in and greeted them in surprise. They knew Sophia was usually frugal, so seeing her in such a luxury hotel was a first. William recognized one of them—it was Tyler, the hospital director's son he had scared off yesterday! Sophia and Nora turned around. Sophia smiled politely. "Gavin, Tyler. It is a coincidence." "Why don't we eat together? You seem to have just arrived," Gavin, the other man, said. He stared at Sophia's face, his eyes hiding deep greed and desire. "If you want to eat here, you have to ask this gentleman," Sophia pointed at William, winking at him frantically. Uh. It took William a second to understand his fiancée's signal. He stood up immediately. "If you two gentlemen don't mind, let's eat together! But since you are rich young masters, why don't you treat us?" Sophia stared at him in disbelief. She almost facepalmed right there at the table. How did he interpret that? What kind of comprehension skill is that? I was signaling him to refuse! Sophia frowned deeply. "And you are?" Gavin frowned, finally noticing the other man at the table. Tyler saw William and almost screamed. He pointed a shaking finger at William and whispered to Gavin, "Gavin, that's him! He's the murderer! Nora... ah! You guys are really together? Nora, how can you be so stupid?" "What?" Gavin heard the word "murderer" and paused, but then he smiled smoothly. He wasn't easily rattled. He walked up to William and extended his hand. "Sir, you must be Nora's boyfriend? What a coincidence. Meeting is fate; let's be friends." Gavin didn't care about Tyler's drama. He liked Sophia, not Nora. Building a good relationship with Nora's boyfriend might help him get closer to Sophia. Seeing Gavin being so friendly to William, Tyler almost vomited blood. Gavin, isn't this too much?! You know this guy is Nora's boyfriend, and you're still being polite? "You're mistaken," William ignored Gavin's hand and said calmly. "I am Sophia's fiancé..." "What?!" Gavin's face changed instantly, going from sunny to stormy. He retracted his hand. He looked at Sophia in shock. "Sophia... is this true?" Sophia suddenly realized the utility of William being her fiancé. He could be the perfect shield to drive away her pursuers. Although admitting it felt like letting William win, it was a fact. She nodded and deliberately moved to sit on William's right side, linking her arm through his. "Yes! This is William, my fiancé." Hearing Sophia's admission, Gavin's brain short-circuited. The beautiful CEO he had been dreaming of... suddenly had a fiancé? However, this news made Tyler ecstatic. He looked at Nora with joy. "Nora! So you guys tricked me yesterday? You aren't William's girlfriend! That's great!" "Who said that?" Nora frowned immediately. She ran to William's left side and hugged his left arm. She glared at Tyler. "William is definitely my boyfriend! Just because he's my cousin's fiancé, does that mean he can't be my boyfriend too?" Pfft! The two rich playboys, along with William and Sophia, almost choked to death on Nora's words.
