THE LAST CALL - Ch7

Chapter 7: Redemption's Edge The hall was quiet, but not silent. Timi stood before the modest crowd gathered at the Youth Rehabilitation Conference Center—a converted church hall now serving as a safe haven for former delinquents seeking purpose. Kelvin sat in the front row, flanked by Pastor James and Officer Bello. The transformation in him was subtle but unmistakable—his shoulders less burdened, his eyes no longer darting with paranoia, but anchored with conviction. Timi cleared his throat and began, "I once stood where many of you stand today. Not in this room, but in spirit. Lost, confused, pretending to be strong while falling apart inside. I thought I was beyond saving. But someone believed I wasn't." He nodded toward Pastor James. The audience of young men and women, some with tattoos, others with wary eyes and clenched fists, leaned in. Kelvin watched them closely, remembering his own resistance. Flashback — Two Months Earlier Kelvin’s wounds had healed, but the inner scars throbbed. At the rehab facility, he struggled with counseling sessions, avoiding eye contact and offering silence for every question. The guilt over Jerry’s arrest and Mama Kelvin’s tears haunted him. One afternoon, he snapped at a group session. KELVIN (angrily) Why do you all act like you’ve never messed up? Like your hands are clean? COUNSELOR ANITA (softly) Because we’re not here to judge you, Kelvin. We’re here to walk with you. KELVIN (spits) I don’t need pity. He stormed out, fists clenched. That night, he found a Bible on his bedside table. He pushed it away. But curiosity betrayed him. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death...” he read. And paused. Present Day “…I didn’t understand it then, but now I do,” Timi said, pacing slowly. “It wasn’t that the valley disappeared. It was that someone walked with me through it.” Kelvin exhaled deeply. Scene: Prison — Jerry’s Cell Jerry was leaner now, eyes hollow. Pastor James visited weekly. Today, he brought a letter—Timi’s testimony. PASTOR JAMES: This is from someone you knew. Jerry read it, jaw tightening. But his hand trembled. TIMI (V.O.) Jerry, I still remember that night. The sirens. Your face. I wish I could go back. But I can’t. What I can do is walk forward. I hope you choose to walk too. Jerry crumpled the paper—but not out of rage. He held it to his chest and wept silently. Scene: Mama Kelvin’s Home Mama Kelvin watched the news as footage of the youth forum played. Her boy—her Kelvin—was on screen, giving a talk on peer pressure. KELVIN (on TV) It takes one moment to ruin a life, but many moments to rebuild it. I’m choosing to rebuild. Tears streamed down her face. She fell to her knees in prayer. Scene: Ejiro’s Room Timi and Ejiro sat by the window, watching kids play outside. EJIRO: You think Jerry will forgive you? TIMI: Maybe. Maybe not. But forgiveness starts with me. She leaned her head on his shoulder. Scene: Church Youth Fellowship — One Week Later The building buzzed with new energy. Jerry had sent word—he wanted to speak. A live call was arranged. JERRY (voice crackling over speaker) I messed up. I hurt people. But if grace can reach a cell like mine… maybe there's hope for others too. The crowd erupted in applause. Timi wiped a tear. Kelvin stood and clapped. Scene: Closing Montage – Kelvin visits schools, holding workshops with Officer Bello. – Timi starts a podcast called “The Last Call,” sharing stories of transformation. – Jerry gets parole approved. Pastor James hugs him outside the prison gates. – Mama Kelvin leads a support group for mothers of at-risk youth. Final Scene: Church Service – A Year Later All three boys now men—Timi, Kelvin, and Jerry—stand on stage, side by side. The choir sings Amazing Grace. Mama Kelvin watches from the pew, hand over her heart. PASTOR JAMES: There are no lost causes. Only stories waiting for redemption. Curtain falls.
