Chapter 6: Paths That Collide
The aftermath of Kelvin’s near-death experience left ripples in every corner of his world. His body, though healing slowly, was no match for the turmoil within. His eyes stared blankly at the ceiling of the rehab center’s dormitory, the rhythmic beep of a heart monitor in the background. Guilt, confusion, and the faintest whisper of hope churned in his soul. For the first time, he wasn’t running.
Back in their neighborhood, the street corners buzzed with news of Jerry’s arrest and the failed robbery. Mothers locked their doors earlier, whispers of gang retaliation clouding the air. Timi, however, moved differently now. Since walking away from the gang, his days had been filled with new questions—about God, about life, about himself. He had become a regular face at the youth center, volunteering with the new church outreach program under Pastor James.
Scene 1: The Youth Center – Late Afternoon
Pastor James watched Timi arrange plastic chairs for the upcoming prayer meeting. There was something steady about him now. No longer the silent observer hiding behind Jerry and Kelvin, Timi now radiated quiet strength.
PASTOR JAMES
“You’ve changed, Timi. Not just on the outside. What happened?”
TIMI
“I saw who I could become if I didn’t turn around. That night, something pulled me back. Maybe it was God. Maybe it was fear. But I knew I had to choose.”
Scene 2: Prison – Visiting Room
Jerry sat across from Officer Bello, his face hardened. But beneath the surface, shame simmered. The cell walls echoed with silence too loud to ignore.
OFFICER BELLO
“You’re not the worst kid I’ve met, Jerry. Not by far. You just got caught in the wrong fire. You still have time to change.”
JERRY
“Change doesn’t undo what I did. They’ll never see me as anything else.”
OFFICER BELLO
“You can’t control what people see. But you can choose what you become.”
Jerry stared down at his cuffed hands. Tears threatened but never fell.
Scene 3: Kelvin’s Rehab – Morning
Uncle Sam sat beside Kelvin’s bed. Mama Kelvin watched from the door, silent prayers on her lips. Kelvin shifted, his gaze locking with his uncle’s.
KELVIN
“I thought I was going to die that night.”
UNCLE SAM
“You did. The old you died. What happens next is your resurrection, if you let it be.”
Kelvin nodded slowly. “Then I want to live differently. I don’t want to die the same way Dad almost did.”
Scene 4: School Assembly – Afternoon
Principal Okoro called the school together for a special assembly. Timi stood on the podium, invited to share his story. He glanced nervously at the sea of young faces.
TIMI
“I thought I had to be like everyone else to survive. But survival isn’t the same as living. I chose life. I chose peace.”
Whispers rippled through the crowd. Some mocked. Some listened. A few… were moved.
Scene 5: Jerry’s Cell – Late Night
Jerry opened a worn Bible Pastor James had left behind. His eyes settled on Romans 5:8 — “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” He didn’t know what grace meant, but that verse planted a seed.
Scene 6: Kelvin’s First Group Meeting – Evening
Kelvin sat among other young men with tattoos, scars, and stories. One by one, they shared regrets, crimes, hopes. When it was his turn, he swallowed hard.
KELVIN
“My name is Kelvin. I almost died trying to prove I wasn’t weak. Now I want to learn what real strength looks like.”
Applause broke out. Not loud. But enough.
Scene 7: Ejiro and Timi – Walking Home
EJIRO
“Is it weird… seeing Kelvin like this?”
TIMI
“It’s humbling. We’re all just one wrong step from falling. But also one right choice from rising.”
EJIRO
“You sound like a preacher.”
TIMI
“Maybe I’m just someone who finally listened.”
They both smiled as they reached home. Peace, once foreign, now knocked on their door.
Scene 8: Officer Bello’s Report – Police Station
OFFICER BELLO (writing)
“Rehabilitation programs are working. Jerry shows remorse. Kelvin’s progress is notable. Recommend continued faith-based support. Hope is rising in these streets.”
Closing Scene: Pastor James at the Pulpit
PASTOR JAMES
“God’s voice is not always loud. But when it calls, don’t ignore it. Because for some, this… could be the last call.”
Camera fades on the youth fellowship singing softly. Timi, Kelvin, and even Jerry—now in different paths—reflecting light where darkness once lived.
