“Your phone been ringing for a hours now” Luke said as he sat down next to me. He handed me a can of soda before turning to the bone fire.
“I know” I said before putting my phone on silence.
“Rio is heading back to get a blankets and some tents” he said “You can catch a ride with him if you want to go home. I mean that is unless you want me to drive you home”
“Absolutely not” Rio said “You need to stay here and keep an eye on Issac and the girls, Chloe and I are perfectly able to take Kim home on the way to get more snakes and blankets”
“Agree” Chloe called from where she was standing next to car.
“I really need a break from these girls because they are driving me insane. I need a some time away with these two perfectly tolerable beautiful smart women to gain back my sanity”
Luke looked down at me “Are you okay with that?” He asked me.
I nodded “I will text you”
He gave me a peck on the lips before I got up and followed Rio to the car.
“Your boyfriend is clingy” Chloe joked as we got into the car.
I chuckled before following her into the car and letting her and Rio drive me home while talking about random things and debating the whole way home.
“Thank you for driving me home, Rio” I told him as we he slowed down in front of my house, then turned to Chloe “And thank you for accompanying us”
She smiled “Its absolutely no problem” she said “Thank YOU for ditching school and coming with us. I hope we didn’t bore the s**t out of you”
“You didn’t. Goodnight” I told them before stepping out of the car.
I gave them a final waved and watched their car leave before I turned to the house. Kyle was sitting on the porch. He hand his arm rested on his knees as he stepped them and had his finger intertwined looking stressed.
I held my breath as I walked up to the porch to where he was standing. Instead of yelling at me, he stood up and pulled me into his chest as he let out a heavy shaky breath.
“I thought you weren’t talking to me” I said as I brought my hands up and around his back in slight relief.
“Don’t leave” he said into my neck “Don’t go back with them. I know I haven’t been the nicest to you but don’t leave with them”
I looked up to the house where his mum was leaning against the open door, she gave me a small smile as he moved her wine glass up to her lips before turned into the house.
“Okay” I agreed confused “Okay, I won’t”
He stayed there with his arms wrapped around me tightly for a few more minutes before he pulled away and tugged me into the house.
He lead me to the stairs before turned to me “Stay with me tonight?” He said “Like old times when I couldn’t sleep. I promise that we won’t fight anymore”
“You go ahead. I’ll be up in a minute” I told him.
He replied with a nod.
I made my way to the kitchen as I watched him climb the stairs to his room. When I couldn’t see the stairs anymore, I turned to his mum standing by the counter pouring herself another class of wine.
“What was that?” I asked.
“I had a talk with him and scared the s**t out of him” she said.
I looked at her waiting for her to further explain.
“Your parents are coming home tomorrow” she announced “I may have told him that you will be leaving with them if he kept acting like an asshole to you”
“My parents are coming tomorrow?” I said surprised “They didn’t tell me”
“It was meant to be a surprise, but with how tense things are between you and Kyle, I figure that using this to fix things between you two is more important than a surprise. Don’t tell your parents I told you so though”
I gave her a smile “Thank you”
“Hopefully, now he wouldn’t be interfering with your love life anymore and things will be so much easier for you” she said “Otherwise, it would be pretty awkward for you two to share his room while your parents are here for the weekend”
I gave her an understanding nod.
“Off to bed, and open door please” she instructed.
I said my goodnight before making my way to the bathroom and taking a shower to wash my day at the lake away. When I was done, I dressed into my pajama and walked into Kyle’s bedroom with the door open.
Kyle was already in bed scrolling through his phone with only the lamp lighting up the room. When I got under the cover and faced him on my side, he closed the phone and turned to face me.
“I’m sorry” he whispered “About all of what happened”
“I’m sorry too” I whispered back to him.
He pulled on my hand up between us and kept his hand on mine with a small smile “I promise that I will try harder if you promise you won’t leave”
“Promise” I smiled “So how is this going to work?”
“Well we can start with making a schedule” he suggested “Like what days I get and what days he does”
“That sounds extreme, but okay” I said “As long as you agree to hang out with us and get to know him without judgement”
“Only if you agree that you will be cheering for me on our next game instead of cheering for him” he said “We both know that I will win anyways”
“Sure, but you cannot interfere in my relationship” I told him “You can’t question me every time I get home, and when I need you too, you have to cover for me”
“Already covered for you when you skipped school today” he said “Where did you go anyways?”
“With Chloe and everyone else. We went to swim in the lake with everyone”
“That’s nice” he said.
I liked it. I like how I could talk to him about what I did today with everyone and not have him get me at me. Talking about the lake and how fun it was hangout with Rio and Chloe was, and how we barbecued and Chloe almost gave us uncooked chicken if Luke didn’t check the food before giving it to Rio and I, and how much of an asshole Issac girlfriend was.
The last thing I remember about that night was how he was talking about awful and weird his days was at school and how his team been practicing extra hard for the game against Luke’s team next week.
It felt good knowing that we didn’t ruin things between us after all that happened in the past few days. I felt good knowing that I can still fall asleep with him like this even though he didn’t approve my choice and because of his feelings. Bust most importantly, it felt nice knowing that I didn’t lose the one person I can’t imagine my life without.
