THE GIRL UNDER THE CHERRY TREE
Episode 1: The Girl Under the Cherry Tree
Haruto Aizawa hated beginnings.
Beginnings meant introductions.
Introductions meant expectations.
And expectations eventually led to disappointment.
That was why, on his first day at Sakura High School, Haruto avoided the crowded hallways and the excited conversations of students meeting their new classmates.
Instead, he walked behind the school.
There was an old cherry tree standing alone on a small hill.
Haruto sat beneath it and looked up at the pale pink petals drifting through the morning air.
For a moment, everything was quiet.
Then someone sat beside him.
"You know," a girl's voice said, "most people are inside trying to make friends right now."
Haruto slowly turned his head.
A girl with long dark hair and bright brown eyes was sitting beside him. She wore the same school uniform and had an unusually cheerful smile.
"I wasn't aware that was mandatory," Haruto replied.
The girl laughed.
"You're funny."
"I'm not."

"What?" Haruto asked.
"Why do you always look like you're saying goodbye to everyone?"
Haruto frowned.
"What kind of question is that?"
"A serious one."
"You don't even know me."
"Exactly!"
Haruto stared at her.
She smiled.
"My name is Yuna Tachibana."
Haruto remained silent.
"Are you going to tell me your name?"
"No."
"Okay, Mr. Mysterious."
Haruto stood up.
"Wait!" Yuna said.
He stopped.
She pointed toward the school building.
"The bell is about to ring."
Haruto began walking away.
"Hey!" Yuna shouted.
He turned around.
She smiled brightly.
"I'll see you later, Haruto Aizawa!"
Haruto froze.
"How do you know my name?"
Yuna held up her phone.
"Class list."
Haruto stared at her for a moment.
Then he turned and walked away.
Behind him, Yuna laughed.
