Chapter 5: Tides of the Heart
The night air was warm, carrying the scent of salt and hibiscus flowers as Izzy stood on the balcony of her villa. The ocean stretched endlessly before her, shimmering under the soft glow of the moon.
Ava had fallen asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow, her heart-shaped seashell clutched tightly in her little hand. Izzy, however, was wide awake, her thoughts tangled like the vines that wrapped around the wooden beams of the resort.
At the center of those thoughts was Danny.
He was charming, certainly. But it was more than that. It was the way he looked at her as if he saw something beyond the walls she had carefully built. It was the way he spoke to Ava as if she were more than just another guest’s child but someone who truly mattered.
It was the way he made her feel like she could breathe again.
A soft knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts.
Izzy hesitated. It was late. Who—
Another knock.
Her heart pounding, she walked over and opened the door to find Danny standing there, barefoot and dressed in a loose white shirt and linen pants. The moonlight cast a glow over his tanned skin, making him look almost unreal.
“Hey,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck. “I hope I’m not waking you.”
Izzy shook her head. “No, I couldn’t sleep.”
Danny studied her for a moment before tilting his head. “Wanna go for a walk?”
Izzy hesitated. Every logical part of her screamed that this was a bad idea. She had spent years keeping her heart locked away, protecting it from ever being broken again.
But tonight, with the ocean calling and the warmth of Danny’s gaze pulling her in…
She nodded. “Let me grab my sandals.”
**A Walk Under the Stars**
The resort was quiet at this hour, the only sounds coming from the distant waves and the occasional chirp of nocturnal birds. They walked side by side along the shoreline, their footsteps sinking into the cool sand.
Danny was the first to break the silence. “You don’t talk much about yourself.”
Izzy smirked. “You noticed?”
“I’m observant.” He glanced at her, his blue eyes twinkling. “But I get it. Some things are easier to keep locked up.”
Izzy inhaled deeply. The air smelled like the ocean—fresh and freeing. Maybe it was the late hour, or the way Danny seemed to truly listen, but before she could stop herself, the words spilled out.
“I was married,” she said quietly.
Danny didn’t react with shock or pity—just patience.
“He was a good man,” she continued, staring at the waves. “Loyal. Steady. Everything I thought I wanted. But life… doesn’t always go the way you plan.”
Danny’s voice was gentle. “What happened?”
Izzy swallowed hard. “He got sick. Cancer. By the time they found it, it was too late.”
Danny didn’t say anything, just let the waves fill the silence between them. When he finally spoke, his voice was laced with understanding.
“I lost someone too,” he admitted. “Not in the same way, but… loss is loss.”
Izzy turned to him, surprised. “Who?”
“My sister,” he said, his jaw tightening slightly. “We grew up on this island together. She was my best friend. But she wanted to see the world, chase something bigger. She left, and I stayed. One day, I got a call that she was gone. Car accident.”
Izzy felt the weight of his words settle deep inside her. “Danny, I’m so sorry.”
He shrugged, though his eyes darkened with memories. “I spent years wondering if I could’ve convinced her to stay. If things would’ve been different.”
Izzy understood that kind of pain all too well—the “what-ifs,” the regrets.
She reached out before she could think better of it, her fingers brushing his. It was a small gesture, but the warmth that spread through her told her it was enough.
Danny looked down at their hands and then back at her. “You know, Izzy… you don’t have to carry all that weight alone.”
Her breath caught because, for the first time in years, she realized she might not want to.
**The Dance of Something New**
They continued walking until they reached a small open-air bar on the beach, its lights twinkling like fireflies. A slow, sultry tune drifted from inside, the kind of melody that wrapped around you like a warm embrace.
Danny turned to her with a smirk. “You dance?”
Izzy laughed. “Not well.”
“Perfect,” he said, grabbing her hand before she could protest.
Before she knew it, he had pulled her onto the sand, guiding her effortlessly. The music swayed between them, slow and teasing, as if it knew they were both balancing on the edge of something dangerous.
Izzy felt herself relax, the tension melting from her shoulders as Danny spun her. She hadn’t danced in years, hadn’t let herself enjoy something so simple.
But here, under the stars, in the arms of a man who saw her in ways she hadn’t been seen in so long…
She let go.
Danny’s hands were firm yet gentle, leading her with an ease that made her wonder how many women had been in this position before her. And yet, the way he looked at her made it feel like she was the only one.
As the song neared its end, Danny’s hand brushed against her cheek, his thumb tracing a slow, deliberate path.
