chapter 4 of The New beginning

Chapter 4: The Walls We Build That evening, the sky transformed into a masterpiece of colors streaks of orange, pink, and deep violet melting into the horizon. The resort was bathed in golden twilight, casting long shadows over the soft, sandy shore. Izzy sat on the deck of her villa, a glass of iced tea in hand, watching as Ava played near the water’s edge. Small waves lapped at her tiny feet, and she giggled as she chased the retreating tide. For a moment, Izzy allowed herself to relax. The day had been… unexpectedly nice. The boat ride, the laughter, the feeling of letting go—things she hadn’t truly felt in a long time. But even as warmth spread through her, a nagging voice in the back of her mind whispered: Don’t get too comfortable. She had built walls for a reason. A gentle knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. She turned to see Danny leaning against the wooden frame, his easy smile in place. “Mind if I join you?” he asked. Izzy hesitated, then gestured to the empty lounge chair beside her. “Sure.” Danny took a seat, stretching his legs out. For a moment, neither of them spoke, just watching the waves roll in and out, in and out—steady, constant. “I have to admit,” Danny said after a while, “I wasn’t sure if you were actually enjoying yourself today or just pretending.” Izzy raised an eyebrow. “Why would I pretend?” He smirked. “Because you seem like someone who’s very good at keeping things locked up.” Her fingers tightened slightly around her glass. “And you seem like someone who’s very good at prying.” Danny chuckled. “Guilty as charged.” A comfortable silence settled between them. It was strange—she barely knew this man, yet sitting here with him felt… easy. Natural. After a moment, Danny spoke again, his tone softer. “You don’t have to tell me anything, Izzy. But if you ever want to, I’m a good listener.” She studied him, searching for any trace of insincerity, but found none. Just quiet patience. She opened her mouth, almost ready to say something maybe not everything, but something when Ava’s excited voice interrupted them. “Mommy! Danny! Look what I found!” Izzy turned to see her daughter running toward them, holding something in her hands. As she reached them, she opened her palm to reveal a small, heart-shaped seashell. Danny whistled. “Now that’s a rare find.” Ava beamed. “It means good luck, right?” Danny nodded. “That’s what the islanders say. A heart-shaped shell means new beginnings.” Izzy felt something stir inside her at those words. New beginnings. Maybe this holiday was meant to be more than just an escape. Maybe just maybe it was the start of something she never saw coming.
