Chapter 3: Ripples in the Heart
The water was warm against Isabella’s skin, a gentle contrast to the flutter of nerves in her chest. She surfaced, brushing her soaked hair from her face, only to find Danny watching her with that signature smirk of his.
“Told you it was nice,” he said, floating effortlessly beside her.
Izzy rolled her eyes, but a small smile played on her lips. “Alright, you win this time.”
Ava splashed over to them, her laughter ringing through the cove. “Mommy, did you see? I can float like a starfish!” She stretched her arms and legs out, her tiny body bobbing on the surface.
Izzy chuckled. “I see you, baby. You’re doing great.”
Danny swam closer, lowering his voice just enough for only Izzy to hear. “She’s fearless.”
Izzy’s smile softened as she watched Ava. “Yeah… sometimes I wish I was more like her.”
Danny tilted his head. “What’s stopping you?”
She hesitated. No one had ever asked her that before.
Before she could respond, Ava suddenly gasped. “Look! A seashell!” She dove under the water, tiny bubbles rising in her wake.
Danny grinned. “She’s got a little explorer’s spirit.”
Izzy nodded, but her thoughts were elsewhere. Maybe Danny was right. Maybe she had spent so much time being cautious—protecting herself, protecting Ava—that she had forgotten how to just… live.
A Private Conversation
After a while, they climbed back onto the boat. Ava was wrapped in a towel, chatting happily about all the things she had seen underwater. As she snuggled into a seat, exhaustion finally catching up with her, Danny handed Izzy a bottle of water and leaned against the rail beside her.
“So,” he said, watching the horizon. “What’s your story, Isabella Carter?”
She stiffened. “My story?”
Danny glanced at her. “Yeah. I know why most people come to a place like this—to escape something, or to find something. Which one is it for you?”
Izzy hesitated. It had been a long time since anyone had asked her a real question.
She exhaled. “A little of both, I guess.”
Danny didn’t push, just nodded as if he understood. “And have you found what you’re looking for?”
She looked out at the endless ocean, feeling its pull. “I’m not sure yet.”
A beat of silence passed between them, heavy with unspoken words.
Then, to her surprise, Danny smiled. “Well, if you’re looking for adventure, you’re in the right place.”
Izzy found herself smiling back. For the first time in years, she wondered if maybe, just maybe, she had finally come to the right place too.
