The pain etched on his face at my words has my heart aching. Aadya whines at the prospect of me rejecting my mate. In fewer words and informally that is what just happened. The room goes deathly silent and my mouth has a bitter taste left in it from the words I just spat at my mate. Up to this point, he has been nothing short of kind and patient. His cobalt blue eyes turn glassy and a muscle in his jaw feathers but he meets my stare dead on. "Millie!" Katherine hisses grabbing my hand and I feel the tension melt in me slightly. All I have ever dreamed of as a child is sitting right across from me waiting with open arms. Yet I can't bring myself to take that leap of faith and put trust in yet another person. How do I know he is even worthy of my trust? 'Because he is our destined mate.' Aadya growls and I feel the backs of my eyes prick and heat with the threatening onslaught of tears. Nearly everyone in the room waits silently with bated breath yet as I stare into my mate's eyes I see no anger. He has even schooled his sadness by putting on a mask but his eyes speak volumes. Understanding. He understands my hesitation. He knows that he must prove himself and even though he is a stranger I can feel the tether between us the bond so strong already. I barely lay a finger on it and am met with the sensation of his hand running along the tether between us. An attempt at soothing me through the bond that seems it has always been there I just never bothered reaching for it before now. A moment so sweet can't go uninterrupted in my world as one of his inner circle speaks stopping me from falling into the bond completely. "Surely you can't mean that?" The man with light brown skin mustard yellow eyes and dark brown hair speaks. Thick-framed black glasses lay on his face and he studies my every movement waiting for a response. I push my shoulders back pop my chin up and stare down my nose at him. "You know nothing of what I mean pup- "You're wrong. I've studied your kind my entire life. You would never snuff our goddess for gifting you with a mate. So what is the problem?" I snort at this wolf's rambling. I can tell he has spent most of his life with his nose in a book and Aadya growls at the thought of him thinking he knows the first thing about us. "And what is my kind?" I lean forward bracing my hands on the table. Maverick turns slightly ready to jump in the line of fire if I act impulsively. Always so level-headed. "The last one. The only one. The gifted one. A myth. A gift from the gods sent down to rain hell on those who threaten this earth. You Elemental are the last of your kind. The rest having been hunted and slaughtered out of fear of their powers that aren't entirely known." Aadya growls the glass on the table rattling most of my mate's members sit back in their seats uncomfortably. Then I feel that soft caress on the tether tying me to this alpha. My attention snaps back to him and I notice the slight tug at the corner of his lip. I don't bother giving a response to the wolf or anyone at the table as I turn and leave through the back door of the cabin. - The tall grass around me sways on the giant hill I sit atop. The smell of fresh pine and dew lingers in the crisp air. The only light from the twinkling stars and bright moon. Something about being in the North brings out a different side of me. Like a calling deep within me is trying to connect me to the earth itself. I can feel it vibrating deep within my bones but I don't know what it's saying. His scent flits to me through the gentle cool breeze but I don't bother giving him my attention. It isn't long before he plops down onto the grass beside me stretching his legs out in front of him and leaning back on his hands. I curl my legs in wrapping my arms around them and keep my eyes on the sky. "They say that packs in the Northern part of the continent are closer to their origins and the gods tend to gift them more often." He goes silent for a moment but I refrain from peeling my attention for the ethereal view. "I didn't use to believe all the tales and myths my mother told us at night. Now that I've met you, well maybe she's onto something." His voice is like velvet softer than what it was before. I finally look at him acknowledging him not as a threat but as my mate. An alpha hellbent on protecting his back just like me. The weight on my shoulders feels just a tad lighter at the thought of not being so alone in this world. I sigh and look back to the stars but my heart still feels heavy, broken. It always will be. "Do you ever wonder what this world would be like if it wasn't driven by power?" My question floats away on the breeze. I face the fact that even though he may be like me in one way he is still an alpha and his need to be all-powerful will forever drive him. "I've always been on the run from my power. It frightens me, the thought of being capable of leveling a continent without batting an eye. I could never stomach it but in the wrong hands... Elementals have been exploited for centuries. Until we were no more, or so everyone thought. I just want to be free to be me." I look at him because honestly if I didn't have heightened abilities I would've thought he left. That's how quiet he has become. His cobalt eyes shimmer under the stars and I could get lost in them if I wasn't careful. "Maybe you need to grab hold of that power and use it, to free yourself." I can feel the magnetizing tension between us and now see that it has drawn us closer. My skin runs along his and sparks fly off of my skin my body buzzing with life. I reach for our bond and lightly run a finger along it before reaching for the iridescent white thread to my powers. It has always been untouched and I use what I have stored within me. Never tapping into the actual pool of power that was buried deep within my soul. Several sets of footsteps grab my attention and I jump to my feet my mate right on my heels. Eight wolves step out in an array of human and wolf forms. I recognize them instantly as my father's men. I thought I was safe here and yet they still managed to find me. My mate's words ring through my mind and I clench my fists clamp my jaw shut and grab that tether yanking it just as I shield my mate. Flames explode out of me lighting everything within its path for a half-mile radius. The howls of pain and cries for help land on deaf ears. I watch as they burn until they lay on the ground as charred lifeless piles but even then I keep a tight hold of that tether not taking power but almost as if it is my lifeline. Cobalt eyes meet mine blocking my view of the destruction I've caused. The gentle caress down the bond has me releasing the tether to my power and stumbling backward like I'd been out of my body. "What have I done?" My hands cover my mouth and I shake my head as tears leak from my eyes. The beautiful landscape has been reduced to ashen rubble trees gone all vegetation and life burnt to a crisp. I'm meant to be one with the elements in touch with nature not burning it to a crisp and killing it. I am a weapon.
