The rain poured down in the night sky as we drove and pulled up to the packhouse. It was late and everyone was already in for the night. The drive had been quiet, other than the sound of the rain beating on the roof. After we left the bookstore, we headed to Esme’s house to grab some things for her and Kenzie to get through the night. Kenzie would stay in the packhouse as well until we could be sure it was safe. Neither of them were happy about it.
I was still fuming about Esme’s lack of self-preservation, but I hadn’t had time alone with her to discuss it. If I had not already been on my way to that bookstore with my dad, she would have been gone. Just seconds later and she would have been in that building right as they were pulling Kenzie and Hailey out of the store.
