Chapter 7: The Same Girl?

1362 Words
Darlene’s POV I was in the forest, surrounded by greenery. I could hear men talking in the distance and a little girl crying. I turn and see three men walking forward. One of them is dragging Doreen as she cried. All the men were walking very carefully. Two of them had brown hair and one had blonde locks. "Gray Gray, help!" Doreen whimpered. "Shut up," the man with blonde hair says, slapping the girl. She whimpered again but stayed quiet this time. Still, her tears were dripping nonstop. "Gabe, we have to hurry. The Alpha is going to be here soon," the man with black hair says. "Both of you, shut up!" I know that voice. That's Beta Bennett’s voice. I looked over at him and saw that he was a bit distant from the other men. What is he doing in this dream? For the last time, I heard Doreen scream, “Gray Gray!” “I said shut up, child!” The man named Gabe hit Doreen, and my view turned black. … I wake up to feel someone wiping my face. I crack my eyes open to see Bernard. He smiled at me softly, and wiped the corner of my mouth. My dream still lingered, but I decided to shut up about it. Maybe it’s just the effect of the wolf’s bane. I’m not sure. "How are you feeling?" Bernard asks. "A little better," I whisper and feel myself. My body still feels hot, but the excruciating pain has long left me. "That's good to hear. My parents are talking with the alpha. So, let me be your nurse for now!” he replied enthusiastically. I sit up with the help of Bernard. Feeling guilty, I said, "You know, you don't have to stay with me.” For the record, I looked like his sister, so I don’t want to bring some painful memories to him whenever we were next to each other. Bernard’s eyes glimmered. "No, it's alright. Of course, it is going to hurt when I see someone that looks like her. But I know Doreen wouldn't want me to feel this way.” "Y—Yeah, I agree." Weirdly, I feel a brotherly connection towards Bernard. I’m not sure whether it's his kind nature or the dreams I’ve been having, but it really got me thinking. And so, I decided to spill the tea. "Bernard, I have been having some dreams ever since I got here." "Really? What kind of dreams?" "Well, the first one was of your sister and a boy she called Gray Gray. They were playing in the pool. You were there too. The second one was of three men, and they were kidnapping Doreen.” Bernard's eyes widened. He was obviously perplexed and didn’t know what to say. Suddenly, he stood up and changed the topic. "Uhm, Felix and Ruby want to see you," he just said and left the room. I was left alone in a confused state. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. It looks like I made him even more distressed. Minutes later, the two kids came running inside my room. We have grown accustomed to each other since we talked a lot in the dungeon. "Darlene! The Alpha let us join the pack and gave us candy. He is really nice," Ruby said. "Wow! Now you guys have a home!” "Yeah, and the other kids are really nice too!" Felix added. I giggled. They are so cute. "So you guys really like it here?" I asked. They both nodded with giant grins on their faces, and perhaps, those were one of the things that helped me slowly recover. … The past week that I have been staying with the Moon Valley Pack was the most refreshing week I have ever experienced. Every day, I woke up with no chores to do, unlike before. Not a screaming Alpha or a ruthless Luna was in sight. When I woke up, the kids would greet me. Then, Sandy and Gavin would treat my wounds regularly whenever I feel the creeping pain. It has been a regular occurrence for me to be in the hospital wing that I don’t even mind the medicinal smell any longer. After that, I get to have breakfast with everyone. Oh, breakfast… I’ve never thought that I’d get to have breakfast like others usually did. Even though the pack seems weary of me because I look like Doreen, they have all been friendly to me. Also, I haven't really seen the Alpha ever since. Bernard has become distant as well. He will only smile and nod at me whenever we crossed paths. I’m pretty sure it’s because I told him about the dreams I’ve been having. I feel so bad… "Darlene, can you fix my hair?" Ruby asks. Right now, we are outside, getting some well-needed fresh air and we are watching Felix play soccer with other kids. "I wanna look pretty for Felix." Ruby's face is the color of a cherry tomato and she diverts her eyes away from me. "Ruby, you do not have to look pretty for Felix because you already are. You two are mates, so no matter what you look like, I guarantee you that he will love you,” I advised, brushing her luscious hair. “Thank you, Darlene…” Ruby replied. I smiled and hummed to her as I braided her hair. We chatted for a while, and after fixing herself, she ran over to Felix to give him water. I smiled at the cute scene. Even kids have a better love life than me. "Your hair looks really pretty, Ruby!"Felix complimented after chugging the water Ruby gave him. Look at this romantic boy! He’s so cute! "T—Thank you!" Ruby replied with a blushing face. They are so cute. And I feel bad that I have to interrupt their little moment because when I looked at my watch, it was already time to eat. "Ruby! Felix! Kids! It’s time for lunch!" We got to the mansion’s dining area. There were a lot of tables, and I decided to sit with the kids. We began eating and as I looked around to see the happy faces of everyone else, I remembered the blurry figures of my loving parents. I remembered that we used to eat together with the rest of the pack too. Although I didn’t remember the details and how everyone looked like, the warm feeling of spending time with your family would always be vivid. Just then, I felt a small hand on my cheek. It was Ruby, and it seemed like she saw my gloomy expression. "What's wrong? Look, there’s a tear rushing down your eyes," Ruby said and wiped it over. Damn it, I didn’t realize that I was already crying. How emotional of me. I shook my head and feigned a smile. "Nothing’s wrong, darling. I was just thinking about my mommy and daddy." "Oh! Where are your mommy and daddy?" Felix asked and I looked over at him. He was sitting next to Ruby. A twinge of pain loomed in my chest. "T—They died a long time ago." Almost instantly, the kids flashed a worried glower. Then, Ruby shared, "I sometimes think about my mommy and daddy and I cry too. I miss them so much.” Now that I think about it, they lost their parents too. They had to run away without having the chance of saying goodbye to their parents and the rest of their pack. I put my hand on top of Ruby’s head. She looked like she was about to cry, but Felix came to the rescue and said, “But, hey! At least we have a new family now. Right?” I smiled. He’s right. Just then, I felt a tight prickling on my neck. It was the same feeling that I have been having a lot in the past week. It was a numbing sensation that made me feel like I was being watched. Nonetheless, I shrugged it off. Maybe I’m just being paranoid because of all the dreams I have been having.
