Hyman’s POV
I enter the pack house and smile. I’m finally home. Everyone crowded around me as I entered the mansion. They expressed how happy they were that I came back in one piece. I laughed. It’s not like I am a weakling who would get defeated just by any others. After bidding gratitude for their genuine welcome, I came to my office and saw Bernard inside. “Damn it, you’re home!”
“Yes, so get out of my seat,” I said and hovered over to my swivel chair. He stood up and gestured for me to sit down.
“How was your journey?”
“Boring, yet reassuring, but more than that, how’s the situation here?”
“Eh, it’s not too bad. Do you want to meet the rogues?”
“Yes. Oh, and bring the kids first, please…”
Bernard nodded and exited my office. I just arranged some files on my desk and he came in once again. This time, two kids were beside him. One was a young girl, and the other was a boy with a serious expression. Judging by their faces, it seemed like they’ve been through a lot.
“Here they are, Gray.” Bernard said and guided the two in front of me.
“Hi, may I know your names?” I asked, passing off as gently as possible.
“I’m Ruby…” the girl said and looked at the boy, “He’s Felix. Our pack has been attacked by Algers and rogues. My parents were shot, and same goes for him. Uhm, A—Alpha Hyman. Please, take us in…” Her words grew mellow, and slowly, they two knelt in front of me. It made my ticker ache. I knelt in front of them and held their cheeks.
“Felix, Ruby. Don’t worry, you are welcome in my pack. Here, you will be protected with the utmost security. No one attacks us, because I will be the one on the front lines. Now, go ahead and be kids,” I said, and they tackled me with a hug. For a brief second, I felt like I was on cloud nine. I would never let these kids down.
After talking to Felix and Ruby, Bernard also brought in the other rogues that wandered into our territory. As expected, they wanted to be part of Moon Valley. And, of course, I accepted them.
“Bernard, where is the last rogue? Bring them in already.”
He looked at me with an anxious expression. “Y—Yeah, she’s in the hospital ward. Mother is taking care of her since she has so much bruises and probably suffered intense torture. There were also traces of wolf’s bane inside her. Maybe next time?”
I knitted my brows upon hearing that. “No, I will meet with her in the hospital. Come with me then.” I stood up from my seat and was about to exit the door when Bernard stopped me.
“Wait, Hyman…”
“What?”
“She… She might not be a good fit for us.”
I tightened my jaw and looked back at him. “What? What made you say that?”
He heaved and looked outside the window. He seemed so hesitant to spill the truth, but he eventually did with contempt. “She looks a lot like Doreen. I don’t want her to affect you.”
“Why would someone who looks like your sister affect me? I’ve long accepted that she’s dead,” I said to Bernard and raced to the hospital, keeping myself calm.
Upon reaching the ward where the rogue was supposedly staying, I saw Sandy and Gavin by her side. They looked at me and had hesitant expressions.
"Alpha Hyman, welcome back. Pardon me, but I don't think you should look at her," Gavin says.
Shaking my head and letting out a low growl, I muttered, "I have already discussed this with your son. I am the Alpha. I have a duty to protect my pack. If this rogue might endanger our pack, then I need to see her."
Gavin and Sandy both looked down and I made my way toward the bed. Little by little, I caught a glimpse of the woman.
I paused as I saw her battered face. She had her eyes closed, but the resemblance was uncanny…
“Doreen…”
The name I blurted out made Sandy and Gavin halt. Sandy walked over to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. My lids were holding my tears as I watched the rogue who looked a lot like my dead mate.
"Alpha Hyman…” Sandy caught my attention, so I looked at her. “I know that it will be painful for you to be around her because of her similarity to my daughter, but please don't put that before your judgement of her. She is a very sweet girl and with some training, she could be my apprentice and become our pack’s doctor."
I pursed my lips and didn’t know what to say. So, she continued her words. “Has your wolf said anything?”
Heaving, I let her know the truth. "Ever since Doreen died, my wolf has resided at the back of my mind. No, he has nothing else to say…" I run my hand through my hair and scratched my nape. The frustration began to eat me up. Who the heck is this girl? Where did she come from?
“I see…” Gavin and Sandy said in unison.
Just then, a mumble came out of the rogue’s mouth.
“Gray Gray.”
My eyes widened. What did she just say?
“Gray Gray,” she repeated once more, and the room was rendered in total silence.
“Did she just…” Bernard’s jaw dropped open, and I knew the exact reason why.
Gray Gray… Only one person called me that, and it was Doreen.
My eyes are piercing through the rogue’s face in disbelief. She was shaking her head with closed eyes as if she was having a really bad dream.
"Gray Gray, help!" she let out another whimper. I couldn't stand it anymore.
But no! This girl isn't my Doreen. She’s dead already! It’s impossible for her to live.
With that, I backed away and ran out of the room.
I kept running until I got outside the mansion where I shifted into my wolf form. Although my wolf counterpart has long shut himself away from me, I could still control my body in this form. Whenever I miss Doreen or feel frustrated, I would run around the forest to relieve the pain I feel inside.
I howled in pain and grief.
I howled for my lost love.
My heart began to break once again.
Doreen, I’m sorry that you aren’t here now. I should have been with you that day. I should have saved you. I should have looked harder. I continue to run until I feel like I am going to collapse.
…
Hours later, I went back to the mansion and Sandy informed me that the rogue, whose name was Darlene, was already doing better. I didn’t say anything anymore and just nodded as if I didn’t have a breakdown.
But now, I am left with the question: should I send the girl back?
"Alpha, most of her wounds are not from rogues. It’s from different type of weapons and poisons. Her wounds are in the shape of a whip’s end. I am pretty sure that she was enslaved by her previous pack. Returning her would only mean death for that sweet girl," Sandy says, her voice shaking in worry.
Upon hearing that, I let out a sigh.
"I know. I plan on letting her stay."
