The two men pulled up their canoe and hid it in the underbrush. They were joined by six other men already on shore. “They passed this way about two hours ago. Four horses and a bunch of people.”
“There were only four of them at the market,” Bert said, stroking his beard.
The group set out following the fresh trail. It wasn’t hard to follow. There were hoof prints in the gravel, a steady drip of blood, and plenty of disturbance from the people who were following on foot. They left the main road and started following a series of back roads that led deeper into the mountains.
