Matthew stared at his brother in disbelief. “You can’t be serious.”
Seth sat astride a chestnut horse, while Laura Remington was astride the bay stallion. Between them were eight men, all bound one to another’s legs like a chain gang, with their hands tied behind their backs and gagged with rags. By the looks of the prisoners, they’d had a rough journey down from the mountains. They all stood in the litter-strewn parking lot of the old hotel.
“I’m totally serious.”
“Who are they?”
“Raiders, from Essex, if you believe their story. They’ve been hitting settlements all the way up and down the creek. They traveled down by canoe.”
“Canoe huh? That’s actually kind of brilliant.”
“It was, until they raided the wrong settlement.” Amy called from the back
