Chapter 2: A Lesson in Power

943 Words
Scarlett groaned as her alarm blared at 5 a.m. Her entire body ached from the previous day. Sorting files for hours on end wasn’t physically demanding, but the mental strain of being in Ethan Blake’s intimidating presence had drained her. She rubbed her temples, glancing at the small stack of cash on her nightstand. It was all she had left for the week, and even that wasn’t enough to cover her mother’s medication. Scarlett sighed, forcing herself out of bed. She had to get through this, no matter how impossible it seemed. By the time she reached Blake Industries, she felt slightly more prepared. Today, she vowed to keep her head down, avoid Ethan’s gaze, and prove she wasn’t as incompetent as he seemed to think. --- Ethan’s Challenge Ethan was already seated at his desk when Scarlett arrived. He didn’t look up as she entered, his eyes scanning a thick document. “You’re late,” he said without preamble. Scarlett’s stomach dropped. “It’s 6:58,” she replied, glancing at the clock on the wall. Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Then you’re two minutes early. A proper assistant arrives fifteen minutes early. Didn’t anyone teach you that?” Scarlett bit her tongue to keep from snapping back. “I’ll keep that in mind.” “See that you do,” Ethan said, finally looking up. He leaned back in his chair, studying her. “Today, I need you to organize the quarterly reports from the marketing department. Then cross-check them with last year’s data and flag any inconsistencies.” Scarlett’s heart sank. She wasn’t an accountant or a business analyst—how was she supposed to do this? “I don’t know much about financial reports,” she admitted, her voice hesitant. “Then learn,” Ethan said, his tone dismissive. “You have until the end of the day.” Scarlett stared at him, stunned. How could anyone be so demanding? But she swallowed her frustration, picked up the files, and marched to her desk. --- Scarlett’s Determination The task was even harder than Scarlett had anticipated. She spent the first hour just trying to make sense of the terminology in the reports. Words like ROI, profit margins, and conversion rates blurred together in her mind. “Need help?” Scarlett looked up to see a young man leaning against the doorframe. He had sandy blond hair, a cheeky grin, and a badge that read “Daniel Carter, IT Department.” “You look like you’re about to pass out,” he said, stepping into the office. Scarlett sighed. “I’m trying to organize these reports, but I don’t even know where to start.” Daniel chuckled. “Ethan’s throwing you into the deep end, huh? Sounds like him.” “You know him well?” Scarlett asked. “Well enough to know he doesn’t give second chances,” Daniel said, his tone turning serious. “But if you need a lifeline, I can help. Just this once.” Scarlett hesitated. She didn’t want to seem incapable, but she also didn’t want to fail. “I’d really appreciate that.” Daniel spent the next hour walking Scarlett through the basics of financial analysis. He was patient and surprisingly good at explaining things in simple terms. “Thank you,” Scarlett said when they finished. “Don’t mention it,” Daniel said with a wink. “But if Ethan asks, you figured it out on your own.” Scarlett managed a small smile. “Deal.” --- Ethan’s Observation From his office, Ethan watched Scarlett with a critical eye. He noticed Daniel lingering near her desk and frowned. Scarlett had been struggling with the reports earlier, but now she seemed more focused. “Interesting,” he muttered to himself. Part of him wanted to see her fail—to prove that she was out of her depth. But another part of him was curious. There was something about her determination that intrigued him, even if he wouldn’t admit it. --- The Confrontation By the end of the day, Scarlett had managed to complete the task. She placed the neatly organized reports on Ethan’s desk, her hands trembling slightly. “All done,” she said. Ethan flipped through the files, his expression unreadable. “You missed three discrepancies,” he said finally, looking up at her. Scarlett’s heart sank. “I— I thought I double-checked everything.” “Clearly, you didn’t,” Ethan said, his tone sharp. “Do better tomorrow.” Scarlett clenched her fists. She had worked tirelessly on those reports, and he hadn’t even acknowledged her effort. “With all due respect,” she said, her voice trembling, “I’m doing the best I can.” Ethan leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing. “If this is your best, Miss Hayes, you have a long way to go.” Scarlett felt tears pricking her eyes but refused to let them fall. “Maybe if you taught me instead of throwing impossible tasks at me, I’d do better.” Ethan’s eyebrows shot up. No one had ever spoken to him like that before. For a moment, he was stunned into silence. Then, to Scarlett’s surprise, he smirked. “Fair point,” he said. “Be here at six tomorrow. I’ll give you a crash course in competence.” --- Scarlett’s Resolve As Scarlett walked home that evening, she replayed the conversation in her mind. She couldn’t decide if Ethan’s offer was genuine or another way to humiliate her. Either way, she wasn’t going to back down. If Ethan Blake wanted to challenge her, she’d rise to the occasion.
