Chapter 1: A Coffee Spill and a Million-Dollar Suit
Scarlett Hayes tugged at her apron, sighing as she glanced at the clock above the counter. It was barely 9 a.m., and the line at Bean Bliss Café already snaked out the door. The smell of roasted coffee beans and freshly baked pastries filled the air, but Scarlett was too tired to enjoy it. She had been awake since 5 a.m., prepping breakfast for her younger brother and her ailing mother before heading to work. This was her first shift of the day; after this, she’d run to her second job at a local diner. “Scarlett, table four!” her manager snapped, pulling her from her thoughts. “Got it,” she muttered, grabbing the tray from the counter. Balancing a steaming latte and a plate of croissants, Scarlett weaved through the crowded café. Her sneakers squeaked against the tiled floor as she approached the corner table. The man seated there didn’t look up. He was dressed in a tailored gray suit, his phone in one hand and a pen in the other, scribbling notes on a sleek leather-bound notebook. His sharp jawline and perfectly styled dark hair made him look like he belonged in a boardroom rather than a coffee shop. Scarlett hesitated. She’d seen her fair share of wealthy, impatient customers, but there was something about this man’s aura that unsettled her. “Excuse me, sir,” she said, placing the latte on the table. “Here’s your order.” The man finally glanced up, his piercing blue eyes locking onto hers. “You’re late,” he said coldly. Scarlett blinked, taken aback. “I— I’m sorry, sir. We’re a bit busy this morning.” He didn’t reply, instead gesturing for her to leave. Scarlett bit her lip, resisting the urge to snap back. She turned to leave but stopped when she felt the tray wobble in her hands. Before she could steady it, the coffee cup tipped over, spilling its contents onto the man’s suit. Time seemed to freeze. “Oh my God,” Scarlett gasped, scrambling for napkins. “I’m so sorry! Let me—” The man stood abruptly, his chair screeching against the floor. “What the hell is wrong with you?” he demanded, brushing at his ruined jacket. Scarlett’s face burned with embarrassment. “I didn’t mean to—” “Do you have any idea how much this suit costs?” he interrupted, his voice rising. The café fell silent, all eyes on them. Scarlett’s heart pounded as she struggled to find the right words. “I-I’ll pay for the dry cleaning,” she stammered. The man let out a bitter laugh. “Dry cleaning? This is a custom-made suit. It’s ruined.” “I’m really sorry,” Scarlett said, her voice trembling. “I’ll find a way to make it up to you.” He crossed his arms, studying her with a mix of irritation and disdain. “And how exactly do you plan to do that?” Before Scarlett could respond, her manager rushed over. “Mr. Blake, I am so sorry for this accident,” he said, bowing apologetically. “We’ll take care of everything.” Blake. Ethan Blake. The name clicked in Scarlett’s mind. She’d read about him in business magazines—he was the CEO of Blake Industries, a global conglomerate. People called him a genius, but also ruthless and unyielding. Ethan turned his icy gaze back to Scarlett. “Your employee ruined my morning,” he said to her manager. “What do you plan to do about it?” “She’s already apologized,” the manager said, shooting Scarlett a warning look. “We’ll cover any expenses—” “No,” Ethan interrupted. “She will.” Scarlett stiffened. “I already said I’d pay for it.” Ethan raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. “And what’s your plan? You don’t look like someone who can afford to replace this suit.” Scarlett’s cheeks flushed. “I’ll work for it,” she blurted out. The café fell silent again. Ethan’s lips twitched into a smirk, though his eyes remained cold. “Work for it? Interesting. Fine. Be at my office tomorrow morning. Seven sharp. Don’t be late.” Scarlett’s stomach dropped. What had she just agreed to? Scarlett walked home in a daze after her shift ended. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows on the pavement, but she barely noticed. Ethan Blake’s sharp words echoed in her mind. Be at my office tomorrow morning. Seven sharp. What was she thinking, agreeing to something so outrageous? She had no idea what kind of work Ethan would expect from her, but judging by his demeanor, it wouldn’t be pleasant. Scarlett reached her small, two-bedroom apartment and was greeted by the familiar smell of chicken soup simmering on the stove. Her younger brother, Liam, looked up from his homework at the kitchen table. “Hey, Scar. How was work?” he asked, his face lighting up when he saw her. Scarlett forced a smile. “Same as always.” Their mother, resting on the couch in the living room, gave her a weak smile. “You’re home early today.” “Yeah,” Scarlett replied, setting her bag down. “I thought I’d help Liam with dinner.” But as she stirred the pot of soup, her mind wandered back to Ethan Blake. She couldn’t back out now—her pride wouldn’t let her. Besides, she needed to make things right. --- The Next Morning Scarlett stood in front of the towering glass building, clutching her bag nervously. Blake Industries was emblazoned in bold letters across the entrance, a testament to the power and wealth of the man she was about to meet. The security guards barely gave her a glance as she entered the sleek, marble-floored lobby. Scarlett felt completely out of place in her thrift-store blazer and scuffed flats. “Can I help you?” the receptionist asked, eyeing her curiously. “I’m here to see Mr. Blake,” Scarlett said, her voice barely above a whisper. The receptionist raised an eyebrow. “Do you have an appointment?” “Yes,” Scarlett replied, trying to sound confident. “He asked me to meet him at seven.” The receptionist made a quick call, then gestured toward the elevators. “Top floor. Good luck.” Scarlett’s heart pounded as she stepped into the elevator. The ride up felt like an eternity, each ding of the floors adding to her anxiety. When the doors finally opened, she was greeted by a spacious office with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the city. “Miss Hayes.” Ethan’s voice cut through the silence, and Scarlett turned to see him standing near his desk, a steaming cup of coffee in hand. He was dressed impeccably, his suit a crisp navy blue that made him look even more intimidating. “You’re on time,” he said, glancing at his watch. Scarlett nodded, clutching her bag tighter. “I said I’d be here.” Ethan smirked. “Follow me.” He led her to a smaller office adjacent to his own. The room was stark and functional, with a desk, chair, and computer. “This is where you’ll work,” Ethan said. “Your tasks will include organizing files, answering calls, and anything else I decide to assign. Any questions?” Scarlett hesitated. “How long will I have to work here?” Ethan shrugged. “Until I decide your debt is repaid.” Her jaw tightened. “Fine.” “Good.” He handed her a stack of papers. “Start by sorting these. Alphabetical order.” Scarlett sat at the desk, her hands trembling as she flipped through the files. The sheer volume was overwhelming, but she refused to let Ethan see her struggle. --- Ethan’s Perspective Back in his office, Ethan leaned against his desk, watching Scarlett through the glass partition. He couldn’t help but admire her determination, even if she was completely out of her depth. Most people would have crumbled under his glare, but Scarlett had stood her ground. He told himself this arrangement was about teaching her a lesson, but deep down, he knew it was more than that. There was something intriguing about her—a spark he hadn’t seen in anyone for a long time. --- Scarlett’s First Day The hours crawled by as Scarlett worked tirelessly. By the time noon rolled around, her fingers were sore from sorting papers, and her stomach growled in protest. Ethan appeared in the doorway, holding a takeout bag. He placed it on her desk without a word before walking away. Scarlett stared at the bag, unsure what to make of the gesture. Tentatively, she opened it to find a sandwich and a bottle of water. Maybe he’s not as heartless as he seems, she thought, though she quickly dismissed the idea. The rest of the day passed in a blur. By the time Ethan finally told her she could leave, Scarlett was exhausted but relieved. As she stepped out of the building and into the cool evening air, she couldn’t help but wonder what she’d gotten herself into.
