Rory Summers has one year to save her future. One year to survive as the personal assistant to Alexander Kane, the cold and brilliant CEO of Apex Holdings. One year to follow the rules, hide her true self, and keep her secret safe.

Alexander Kane is everything she was warned about. Ruthless, untouchable, and impossible to impress. Every assistant before her has failed. But Rory refuses to be invisible. She refuses to break.

She hides behind dark dyed hair, oversized clothes, and thick glasses. She keeps her head down, answers every question perfectly, and stays out of his way.

It works on everyone but Alexander. He notices her too quickly. Every subtle movement. Every small slip. Every secret she thought was hidden.

When threats against Apex Holdings escalate, Rory is pulled deeper into Alexander’s world. Living under the same roof, keeping secrets, and surviving his scrutiny becomes a dangerous game. Their proximity sparks tension neither expected. Her disguise starts to crack. Her hair shows hints of gold, her true self begins to emerge, and Alexander sees past the lies.

Now the line between work and personal life is gone. Rory must decide how far she will go to protect her secret, and Alexander must decide how much he can trust her. One year, one lie, one choice that could destroy them both.

The Great Lie. Day One ... and the game begins.
Aurora "Rory" Summers stood in front of the massive walnut door. In cold, silver letters, it read: Alexander Kane – CEO. Her palms were damp, and her heart hammered like a trapped animal under her white blouse, buttoned to the very last notch. She could do this. She had to. All she had to do was knock, enter, and play her role for one year. One year of pretense to save her parents' house. What could be simpler? She pushed her thick-framed glasses higher. She checked the austere bun at her nape, ensuring not a single strand of her recently dyed, dull brown hair escaped. Her oversized gray blazer hung off her shoulders like borrowed armor, hiding her curves under a layer of studied mediocrity. She was ready. She raised her fist to knock, but before she could, a low, authoritative voice resonated from inside: "Come in." Rory opened the door and stepped into the lion’s den. The office was a monument of glass and steel dominating Wall Street. But it wasn't the view that took her breath away; it was the man standing with his back to her, staring at the leaden Manhattan sky. When Alexander Kane turned, Rory felt an electric shock in her chest. His father had warned her. Old man Kane said his son had become a monument of cynicism after the betrayal ten years ago, but he’d forgotten a crucial detail: Alexander was devastatingly, almost dangerously handsome. Tall, with features carved in granite and a jaw emanating raw power, he had a magnetism that seemed to absorb all the oxygen in the room. A rebellious lock of black hair fell over his forehead, only partially softening a metallic gray gaze capable of cutting through any mask. Alexander studied her from head to toe, unhurriedly. His thin lips tightened in barely masked contempt. "Miss Summers?" his raspy voice woke shivers she wasn't prepared for. "Take a seat." She sat down, stiff, clutching her bag. "Yes." He didn't tear his gaze away. "You have ten minutes to convince me you’re not a waste of time. And be honest. I don't like people who play with my time." He leaned back, crossing his arms over a broad chest dressed in a suit that cost more than her rent for a year. "For starters, you don't look like an Apex Holdings assistant. You look like a librarian who got the wrong building. But father insisted, so... convince me." Without transition, Alexander attacked. His voice grew sharp, testing her on hostile mergers and capital markets like he was throwing daggers. Aurora did not falter. Using every drop of control, she answered with a naturalness that made Kane raise a dark eyebrow. At the third question about Asian portfolios, Alexander leaned toward her. The distance narrowed dangerously. Aurora could smell his scent—a mix of sandalwood, leather, and power. Her heart beat madly, but her voice remained stable as she explained shareholder protection strategies. A heavy silence settled, charged with a tension that had nothing to do with business. Alexander looked at her, his irritation growing. This woman was a contradiction: cheap second-hand clothes and ridiculous glasses, but a mind like a razor. "Damn it..." he murmured through his teeth. He snapped the file shut. "You can start tomorrow—or today. It seems father made an... interesting choice. Let me show you your desk." He stood with a predator’s grace and led her to the adjoining office. "This is your new home. Familiarize yourself with the place. I want you back in my office in an hour. Although, to tell you the truth, there is only one thing I expect you to truly do." Aurora looked at him cautiously through her round lenses. "What exactly, Mr. Kane?" "Do exactly what I tell you." He grinned, and that vicious smile made her knees tremble. Aurora straightened her back, summoning all the pride she had left. "'Doing what you tell me' is not in my job description, Mr. Kane," she informed him icily. "You will have to be more specific." His gray eyes sparkled with dangerous amusement. "I’ll see what I can do. Oh... and one more thing." He stepped behind her, so close she felt his body heat. Alexander raised his hand and, with a touch light as a breath, straightened her collar. His fingers accidentally brushed her neck. Her skin caught fire. "Rest easy, Miss Summers," he whispered at her ear, his voice promising hot nights and wicked secrets. "Just a second." He moved away, leaving her trembling. Rory realized the game had just begun. Alexander Kane was a far more dangerous adversary than she’d anticipated. Her lie had to be perfect.
