The weather was bitterly cold, yet this private clinic had not turned on the heating.
I wrapped myself tightly in my coat, trying to keep my abdomen from getting cold.
A nurse walked over, glanced at me, and frowned as she asked, "Did you come alone? No one is with you? Where’s the baby’s father?"
I stood up, forced a smile, and shook my head.
The nurse didn’t say anything, just handed me a form to fill out.
I nervously asked her, "Can I use the cheapest medicine? And these, these, and these tests, can we skip them?"
The nurse gave me a sympathetic look but firmly refused, "No, you can’t. Finish the form and go pay."
This private clinic was much cheaper than the hospital and was also one of the few clinics willing to treat werewolves, but they only accepted cash.
I had no choice but to go to the ATM at the hospital entrance to withdraw money.
It was raining, and I was shivering all over from the cold.
But what made me tremble even more was when I entered my password and checked my account, only to find that my savings were completely gone.
How could this be? I had just received my paycheck from the restaurant job last week! In just one more month, I would have saved enough for my college tuition. How could there be nothing left now?
I was panicking, at a complete loss.
Just then, my phone rang. It was my aunt, Anna.
"Ellie, where have you run off to? Why aren’t you back to make dinner?"
I whispered an explanation, "I’m at a prenatal check-up... Auntie, did you take the money from my account?"
Aunt Anna’s voice sounded indifferent. "Yes, I did."
I was frantic. "That was my college tuition money!"
Aunt Anna was also angry. "What? I’ve worked so hard to raise you, and now I can’t take a little of your money? Your cousin wants a new phone. How could I not buy it for her?"
Five years ago, my parents died in a car accident, and my aunt and uncle took me in. Since then, I’ve had to clean the house, prepare dinner for my aunt, uncle, and cousin, and work part-time to pay for my education.
My aunt’s family never liked me, but I always felt grateful just to have a home.
However, I never imagined they would take the money I had worked so hard to save.
The rain grew heavier, and my sobs mixed with the sound of the downpour.
"But I’m supposed to graduate in a year. How can I continue my studies without that money? And my baby—I still need to do the check-ups and buy medicine! Auntie, please, give the money back to me, okay?"
Aunt Anna angrily cursed, "No way! You’re so ungrateful. I’ve wasted my time raising you!" and then hung up.
When I called back, she simply turned off her phone and refused to answer anymore.
A clap of thunder rang out, and a sharp pain shot through my abdomen. I knew my baby was crying for me too, but I couldn’t collapse.
Stumbling, I made my way back to the clinic, completely drenched. I walked into the restroom and curled up in a corner, not knowing what to do.
"It hurts... Baby, Mommy will hold on. Just hang in there a little longer..."
What should I do?
Lost and in pain, I thought of the baby’s father.
I couldn’t go to a human hospital because my baby’s father was a werewolf.
I could no longer remember what he looked like, only the accident five months ago.
Five months ago, I was delivering takeout to earn money for my tuition when my cousin, Kelly, suddenly gave me an address, telling me she had found me a part-time job.
I was thrilled and grateful for Kelly’s help.
The job Kelly introduced was as a server at an upscale banquet, but what she didn’t tell me was that it was a werewolf banquet.
Werewolves and humans had always kept their distance, never interfering with each other. Although some humans secretly worked for werewolves for high pay, everyone knew it was extremely dangerous.
Not only because werewolves themselves were ferocious, but also because any human discovered working for them would be exiled from human society, left homeless and alone.
But I needed the money desperately. My college advisor had told me that if I didn’t pay my tuition soon, I would be expelled.
I didn’t want to drop out. I wanted to become an excellent teacher and change my fate.
The banquet was held in a valley. I put on my prettiest dress and told myself that if I could just get through this night, I would earn enough to continue my studies.
All I had to do was pour drinks and serve food. That was all.
But when I walked into the banquet hall, I realized Kelly had deceived me.
A middle-aged man, dressed extravagantly but with a bulging belly, approached me. I could almost smell the nauseating cologne on him. His fat face was squeezed into a grin, revealing small, beady eyes.
He smiled at me, handed me a glass of wine, and after I politely took a sip, he grabbed my hand and tried to pull me into the hallway.
"You’re Ellie, right? I’m a friend of Kelly’s."
I felt uncomfortable and tried to pull my hand away, but he held on tightly. His other hand even started to creep up my skirt.
I pushed him away. "I’m sorry, but I think I need to leave."
I felt unwell, my head spinning as if I were about to faint.
But he didn’t let go. Instead, he pulled me closer.
"Kelly already sold you to me. Tonight, you belong with me."
I stared at him in horror, but my body felt weak and powerless.
