I had decided I couldn’t tell anyone about Count Killoran.
If I told Brielle she would probably tell Marsden. If I told Chloey, she would lose her s**t. If I told Marsden, he would most likely be killed.
For once I was alone in something.
“What did Count Killoran want with you?” Brody asked.
“I don’t think that’s any of your business,”
“You’re my sister, of course it’s my business.”
“Well you have not been concerned with my business for the last ten years, no point in starting now. “ I stated.
“When are you going to forgive me Jo?” He groaned.
“Maybe in ten years,”
“Come on, we’re living together again, this is the perfect time to work on our sibling relationship. I mean we’re on the same side. And I’m guessing Chloey and Zoey are pretty pissed at you, so I’m really the only sibling you have.”
I was so glad that that wasn’t true. I still had Chloey and she would never be angry with me about this.
“I have Brielle,” I smiled. “She’s gonna be my new sister.”
“Exactly,” Brielle spoke up. “She doesn’t need you Brody.”
“Do you?” He asked slyly.
Brielle pretended to be disgusted, but I knew she was flattered. Girls always were when it came to Brody. They found him charming and cool. His brown eyes were pretty intense and his smile was considered enticing. This is what my friends used to tell me when they said my older brother was hot.
It’s gross.
“Leave my future sister in law alone, Brody.” I declared.
“You’re really going through with marrying Marsden?” He sneered.
“Yes, I love him very much and he loves me. We’re very good together.”
“Please, he’s not cut out for this life, and you know it.”
“We’ll see about that.”
As if on cue, we heard loud voices talking animatedly. The Dark Vampiric Warlocks were back from their raid. They entered the living room. They sure looked happy.
Marsden came over to me and kissed me hard.
“Not too much of that now!” Brody declared. “What are you all so excited about anyways?”
“Marsden was incredible tonight,” Rueben stated. “That was one of our most successful raids yet.”
“Just beginner’s luck, I’m sure.” Marsden grinned. “These guys gave me some great pointers.”
“And he took all of them with ease,” Raner laughed. “You’ve got a good man there, Joey. Count Killoran will be very pleased with him.”
“A good man you say?” I smiled before kissing Marsden. “I’m so proud of you baby.”
“Thanks. All I want to do is make you proud,” Marsden whispered.
“Hm,” Brielle hummed. “Looks like my brother is cut out for this life.”
--
Count Killoran had good taste.
The dress he picked out for me to wear for my ceremony was insanely beautiful. It was of course black. It had thin straps and was form fitting with a high slit. Marsden thought I looked absolutely stunning.
If only he knew that this dress wasn’t meant to please him.
We went to the same place where Brielle had her ceremony. This time I didn’t have to be blindfolded. I still didn’t really know where it was to be honest.
I was meant to show up a little bit after everyone else, since I was the guest of honor. I was met with clapping when I entered the room. For a moment it felt great and then I remembered what they were clapping for. Because I was a Dark Vampiric Warlock who betrayed her family.
I was not exactly proud of that.
I was just thrilled to make my rounds and see some friends.
“You look beautiful,” Simone gushed.
“So do you. I miss you.” I hugged her tightly. “Are you okay?”
“I didn’t realize it was going to be like this,” Simone whispered. “Paxton said it was for protection. So that if things turned bad we would be safe. But he has to go on raids and…I just feel so lonely all the time.”
“Yeah, Marsden just did his first one.” I sighed. “If you don’t want to feel so alone, maybe you could stay with us. The house is huge.”
“You think Count Killoran would allow that?”
“I think I can convince him.”
“Thank you, Joey. How are your sisters?”
“I uh…don’t know. I don’t talk to my family anymore.” I smiled sadly.
“Right. Me neither. It’s horrible.” Simone shook her head.
“Yeah it sucks.”
Simone plastered a smile on her face when Paxton and Bryce approached us. Bryce was looking at me strangely.
“Congrats, Joey,” Paxton stated. “At least I think that’s what I’m supposed to say.”
“Yeah, I guess,” I laughed. “Thank Paxton. And nice to see you Bryce.”
“Can we talk?” He asked.
“Yeah, okay. I’ll see you guys in a bit.” I let Bryce gently pull me away. “What’s up?”
“What the f**k is wrong with you?”
“Excuse me?”
“Why did you turn Joey? You deserve so much better than this! Why would you throw your life away?” Bryce hissed.
“I had to tell Bryce, there’s things…look you just wouldn’t understand, okay? But I know what I’m doing. I promise you that I do. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“You did all of this for Marsden Thorton?”
“Not solely for him, no. Like I said, I know what I’m doing. I’m not a child. You don’t need to look out for me.” I said firmly.
“Fine. You’re just so much better than this.”
“Hello, Bryce,” Marsden said, coming up behind me. “How are you?”
“I’m great, Marsden really.” Bryce said dully. “You better take care of her.”
“I have and I will.” Marsden stated. “I know how to take care of my fiancee, okay?”
“Sure. I’ll see you guys later.” Bryce stalked away.
“What does he want?”
“He’s worried about me,” I shrugged. “But of course he doesn’t need to be, right?”
“Right.”
“Oh, there’s Keene!” I hurried over and hugged him tightly. “Oh I’ve missed you!”
“I’ve missed you too, Joey. You look amazing!” Keene smiled.
“How have things been since…?”
“We were all outed in front of all of our peers? Not great. Um…Misty’s never gonna speak to me again.”
“I’m so sorry Keene,” I whispered.
“Worst part is she wasn’t really mad about what I am, but she was upset that I didn’t trust her enough to tell her, but I told you.” He sighed. “I think she thinks that’s worse than cheating.”
“She’s probably never gonna speak to me again either,” I sighed. “None of our friends are.”
“You know who actually doesn’t seem too pissed? Zander.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, he says he might need time, but he gets it. You know the family aspect of it all.” Keene smiled.
“I knew he was such a good guy,” I laughed slightly. “Still kinda wish he was with my sister.”
“Do you miss them?”
“Like crazy.”
“I’m sorry Joey, I have to talk to you again,” Bryce pulled me away from Keene.
“What is going on with you?” I whispered.
“I finally figured it out.”
“Figured what out?”
“You being here and why you turned and all of that.” Bryce breathed.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“You’re a spy,”
“Bryce-”
“And I know that…because I’m a spy too.”
