Tate looked at his parents like they were insane.
“What?” He asked. “No way! I can’t kill Zoey, I love her”
“So you’ll let her get in the way of your destiny?” Mrs. Highmore asked.
“She is my destiny! I love her and we’re going to be together forever! There must be another way to get the key, but I can’t kill Zoey.”
Not that I thought Tate would have actually killed me, but I was still relieved that he refused to. With the fate of the Witching Domain on the line, I was sure if he would do any and everything to save it.
“If you won’t kill her, we will.” Mr. Highmore declared.
“What did I do?” I asked. “Why do I have to die?”
“Your ruinous blood will taint the world,”
“What ruinous blood, what does that mean?”
“You come from a line of very dangerous people and you will continue the chaos and destruction. Your father-”
“I am nothing like my father!” I shouted. “I don’t have ruinous blood!”
“We may never know,”
All of the ghosts attempted to swarm us, but my body reacted too quickly. A blue forcefield shot up around us. The blue energy finally worked for just me!
“How are you doing that?” Tate asked.
“I don’t know, it just works! Let’s go!” I pulled him away hoping that the forcefield would stay around us.
The forcefield didn’t crumble as we moved through the forest. I looked around desperately for something light and finally something caught my eye. It looked like there was a light coming from a hole.
“Tate, over there!”
We ran up to the hole. It seemed to small to fit us, but the ghosts were on our tails, so I just took a leap…literally.
The hole opened up and we were met with water. I opened my eyes, looking for an exit. I could only hold my breath for so long. Tate tugged on my hand. He had spotted another glimmer of light. We swam to follow it. It moved on its own.
I gasped as we finally broke the surface of the water. We made our way to the shorte, gasping for air.
“Tate?” I whispered.
“Yeah, Zo?”
“Thanks for not killing me.”
“Anytime, baby, really.” He laughed slightly.
We got up and continued following the light that was waiting for us. It led us through a dark tunnel.
“What if this is a trap?” Tate whispered.
“It can’t be,” I stated. “It’s the light that Chloey was talking about .”
“But what if it’s leading us to our deaths?”
“Then we die together, that’s kind of romantic right?”
We came across a cave that was full of light. It was empty.
“I told you it was a trap,” Tate groaned. “And there’s probably no way out of this either.”
“No, there has to be something!” I walked around the cave, looking for clues.
“There’s nothing here, Zo.”
I noticed the ball of light was floating in one spot, no longer moving. I approached it and suddenly felt hypnotized by the light. I needed to touch it.
“Zoey, don’t touch it-”
My hand was already enclosed around the ball. The light spread throughout my body quickly enveloping me completely and taking me away from the cave.
I was now in a field. It was beautiful and quiet.
“Zoey,”
I turned around and saw girl about my age, who kind of looked like me and my sisters. “Who are you?” I asked.
“Elowen Roser.”
“Where am I?”
“You are where Count Killoran was created…I helped create him.” She informed me.
“Why did you do that?” I questioned.
“I didn’t know what he would turn into. Me and my sisters believed in his cause. He just wanted us to live comfortably with the mortals. He wanted us to thrive and flourish. We only knew him to be a kind man…before he killed Gwen’s lover.”
“Who is Gwen?”
“My sister. I have two, we’re triplets.” Elowen stated. “Like you and your sisters.”
“So you three created Count Killoran…I’m trying to defeat him. I’m here for the first key. Do you know anything about that?”
She nodded. “My descendants Sedona, Odessa, and Paloma were the ones to hide the keys. They made sure only a triplet and a Highmore could get to them.”
“Wait what? So Tate and I are like…meant to be?” I whispered.
“I can only say that this is your destiny, Zoey. You and your sisters are meant to do great things.”
“Even Joey?”
“Especially her,”
What did that mean? What did she know about Joey that I didn’t.
“Give me your hand, Zoey,” Elowen smiled.
I did as she said and felt her place something in my hand. I looked down and saw a key.
“Thank you so much Elowen,” I said. “I will fulfill my destiny, I promise you.”
“I know you will.” She nodded. “Good-bye Zoey.”
The light enveloped me again and when I opened my eyes I was with Tate. We were no longer in the cave, but outside of the hole that we’d jumped in.
“What just happened?” Tate asked.
“I’ll explain later, but we gotta get out of here before your parents kill me.”
“Tate!” Mr. Highmore called. “You must kill her!”
You know what? I was done running. I would confront the Highmores.
“Zoey, what are you doing?” Tate hissed.
“I need to know why I have ruinous blood,” I said firmly.
The ghosts surrounded us again.
“Why do you want me dead?” I demanded. “What did I ever do to you?”
“Not you, your blood.”
“What did my blood do?”
“Your father…he killed me.”
