Inner Demons

Zoey’s POV I couldn’t even hear myself think. All I could hear were the horrific voices in my head, breaking me down. Still I couldn’t see where they were coming from. I was just trying to block them out, but they were too loud. I looked over at Tate who seemed to be in just as much turmoil as I was. How do we stop this?! It felt like  the voices were going to actually kill us. Suddenly, power was rushing through my body. A forcefield shot up around us. All at once the voices stopped. The forcefield was stopping them. Tate and I breathed heavily as we recovered. “I am really starting to love the blue energy,” Tate admitted.  “Me too,” I gasped.  “What the hell was that?” “I don’t know, It was like every bad thing I had ever thought about myself was screaming at me.” “Me too, all of my insecurities and fears were swirling about my head, but I couldn’t see who was saying them.” “It was like it was all in our head…like…inner demons! We can’t physically see them! They project into our minds. That’s why we couldn’t hear what the other could. It’s in our heads!” I exclaimed.  “You’re brilliant!” “Not according to those demons. They said I wasn’t as smart as Chloey or as fun as Joey. That I was just…here.” “You are not just here,” Tate assured me. “You’re beautiful, funny and intelligent. You are everything, Zoey. Don’t listen to what those voices say.” I smiled. “Thanks babe,” I stood up. “ Looks like we’ll be under the force field again.” “I wonder if you can conjure anything else up?” Tate asked as we started walking. “With my sisters I can,” “But they’ve done like that healing mist right?” “Yeah, but I don’t think healing mist would help us in any of these situations,” I pointed out. “True enough,” “So what were your inner demons telling you?”  “That I wasn’t good enough, that I failed my parents. Also that you were much too good for me. That you were better off with Zander.” Tate wouldn’t meet my eyes. “I was in less danger with Zander to be fair,” I laughed. I was glad when Tate smiled too. “So what you’re saying is he’s boring?” “Oh stop! He was a nice guy,” “Yeah, okay.” Tate snorted.  When we were halfway to the volcano, the forcefield disappeared. I pressed my hands to my ears, preparing for the inner demons, but there was silence. “I guess the blue energy knew there was no more danger,” Tate stated. “I love that thing.” “It’s a handy little thing. I just wish I could control it,” I huffed as we kept walking.  All that could be heard was the sound of bubbling lava and the occasional rumbling, like a volcano was getting ready to erupt. I had a feeling that if one did erupt, it would be at the worst timing.  It was a lot better than the Covenman Territory. But maybe that’s because no ghosts were trying to kill me. We froze as the ground started shaking furiously.  A crack in the ground separated Tate and me. I reached out for him, but it was too late, we were on separate pieces of ground that were floating in the lava. “Just, stay there Zoey!” Tate called as he looked around, trying to find stable ground. “Nowhere to go, honey!” I called back.  I was trying to steady myself on this ground. It was swaying in the lava lake and could tip over at any point. I needed to find the right place to stand so that I could balance it.  “Zoey, look out!” I looked up when my piece of ground collided with a column of stone, throwing me off and into the lake of lava. Joey’s POV Regan Thorton’s words rang through my head.  My father killed Wade Highmore. It was strange because I kind of already knew that he did, but hearing it and having it confirmed was a different feeling altogether. My father was such an evil man. I might actually hate him.  “Morning, Joey,” Dad kissed my forehead.  “Morning, murderer,” I responded.  “Oh, what’s wrong now?” “You killed Wade Highmore?” “Yes. Is that what you’re upset about? I didn’t realize you knew him.” He stated. “If I have the chance I’ll kill his son too.” “You know Zoey is dating Tate, right?” I asked. “You’re going to kill her boyfriend?” “I might have to kill yours too, Joey. The moment he messes up, it’s over.” “He won’t,”  “Everyone does.” He smirked.  “Not you and Brody,” I pointed out. “Right? You guys are Count Killoran’s favorites. Let’s see if Marsden can get into that exclusive little club too. Then he’s safe.” “What do you see in this boy? Huh? He’s beneath you.” “You’re beneath Mom and she married you.” “Joey, you cannot talk to me like this. I’m your father-” “Barely! I haven’t seen you since I was ten! You don’t know anything about my life that doesn’t have to do with being a Dark Vampiric Warlock! And you don’t care! So I don’t care about hurting your feelings or being disrespectful to you! You don’t want to act like a father, then I don’t want to act like a daughter.” I walked out of the room and stomped up the stairs. I flung the door open and Marsden seemed to be having some kind of tantrum.  “What’s wrong babe?” I asked.  “I can’t stand my father! He’s so bitter and jealous of me! He’s saying I didn’t earn my spot here? Like I didn’t take down a whole f*****g barrier!” I sighed and closed the door before walking over and hugging him. “My father is an asshole too.” “I would hate them, but without them, we wouldn't have each other,” Marsden kissed me. “Anything that keeps you with me is worth dealing with.” “I have to agree,” I smiled up at him. “I can’t believe my dad blames me for how things are now. Like it was my fault that he was in prison. No one told him to kill Wade Highmore.” “Um, Marsden, you should sit down,” I stated.  “Why?” “I have to tell you something about our fathers.” Chloey’s POV I walked around aimlessly. I had meant to go find Rune and apologize, but I got nervous and decided I maybe just needed to clear my head instead.  I thought a lot about what Rune said about feeling important. I didn’t realize he felt so average and normal. I thought he was happy with who he was. But I guess when your best friend is the next great Hunter and your girlfriend is a triplet witch destined for greatness you start to feel a little less than. I had never thought about it like that before today. Now Rune was actually helping with something big and it was exciting for him, and I kind of ruined for him. What was so wrong with being excited about taking down Count Killoran? It was kind of a thrilling thing! I needed to remember that. Of course there was a lot at stake, but there was also a lot to be proud of. He should be proud of himself, and I should be proud of him. I looked ahead of me and smiled.  There was Rune sitting against a tree, reading his werewolf book. I approached him. I knew he saw me, but he pretended he didn’t.  “How’s the book?” I asked.  “Average, just like me.” I sighed and sat next to him. “Rune, I’m sorry. I was being so negative and insecure. I want you to be happy and feel important.” He looked up from his book. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted,” “And it’s not a bad thing to want. Your name will go down in history just like mine.” Rune smiled. “And it will be the biggest honor of my life. I love you Chloey.” “I love you too.” I kissed him. “Now how is the book really?” “Very informative, I’m working on something actually.” “And that is?” “You’re going to think I’m insane,” “Too late,” I teased. “I want to learn how to shift without the moon. Like I did at Obsidian.” Rune stated.  “That’s kind of dangerous, right?”  “Not if I really control it.” “We wouldn’t know where to begin with that,” I declared. “Someone else might,” Rune pointed out. “Who?” “Director Magnus.”
