As Jason had expected, he’d missed two phone calls from his mother. The annoyance that flashed through him, however, was tinged with a sort of weary relief. This time, he actually wanted to talk to the prima…if only to give her a carefully edited version of what had transpired over the past few days. She needed to be primed before he dared bring Laurel Wilcox to San Francisco. He eased himself down onto the couch at his borrowed condo and tried not to wince. The dull ache had returned to his ankle, probably thanks to the drive down here. By the next day, it would most likely be fine, but for now, he needed to take it easy. The extremely mild buzz from that one beer he’d drunk had already worn off. While grabbing another from the fridge sounded tempting, he knew that probably wasn’t a go
