The Blackwood Tides
EXT. BLACKWOOD CREEK - DUSK The air is thick, a humid shroud of salt spray and Spanish moss clinging to the sagging skeletons of ancient oaks. ELENA VANCE (32, sharp-eyed, wearing a leather jacket that hides a frame tightened by years of city-bred anxiety) stands at the end of the rotting wooden pier. Behind her, the town of Blackwood sits like a faded photograph—all peeling white paint and unspoken sins. She hasn’t been back in five years, not since her career in D.C. imploded and the name Vance became synonymous with scandal. But the phone call from the local sheriff—cold, dismissive, calling Maya a "runaway"—had stripped away her pride. Elena turns toward the abandoned shipyard on the north bank. The Blackwood family, the town’s silent overlords, own the land. She isn't supposed to be here. She steps over a rusted chain, her boots thudding against the concrete floor of a skeletal warehouse. Using her phone’s flashlight, she weaves through piles of scrap iron and decaying nets. In the corner, near a jagged piece of rebar, a glint of silver catches the light. Elena freezes. She kneels, her breath hitching. It’s a charm bracelet—Maya’s. The links are twisted, and a dark, oxidized smear of dried blood coats the central charm. A floorboard creaks behind her. Elena spins, her pulse spiking. A tall, broad-shouldered silhouette blocks the moonlight streaming through the shattered skylights. JULIAN CROSS (35, rugged, with eyes like flint and a demeanor that speaks of violence kept on a very short leash) stands there, his hands tucked into the pockets of a heavy canvas coat. "You always did have a knack for finding things that stay buried, Elena," he says. His voice is a low rumble, instantly recognizable, instantly dangerous. "But you’re trespassing on private property. And in this town, that’s a quick way to end up in the mud." INT. JULIAN’S SALVAGE OFFICE - NIGHT The office is a cramped, claustrophobic space filled with nautical charts, old radios, and the sharp scent of cedar and diesel. Rain hammers against the tin roof, a relentless rhythm that mimics the pounding of Elena’s heart. Julian tosses a glass of bourbon onto the desk, pushing it toward her. He’s standing too close, a wall of heat and salt air. "The police won't help me, Julian," Elena says, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "Maya didn't run away. She was taken. And you know who runs the docks. You know who was here tonight." Julian leans over the desk, his shadow swallowing her. He reaches out, his thumb grazing her jawline—a touch that is part threat, part involuntary memory of a night five years ago that nearly destroyed them both. Elena flinches, but she doesn't pull away. The air between them is electric, heavy with the ghosts of a love that was defined by volatility and broken promises. "You think you can just march back here and stir the hornet's nest?" Julian’s eyes darken, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. "You have no idea what these people are capable of. They don't just kill people, Elena. They erase them. If you keep digging, you’re not just going to find your sister—you’re going to find your own grave." "I stopped caring about my safety the moment Maya went missing," she whispers. He steps into her space, his chest brushing hers. The anger in his expression is mirrored by a raw, desperate hunger. They are like two tectonic plates shifting, ready to cause an earthquake. His hand moves to the back of her neck, his fingers tangling in her damp hair. He pulls her just close enough that she can feel the heat radiating off him. "You’re playing a game you can’t win," he murmurs, his breath hitching as he stares at her. "And if I help you, I’m putting a target on my own back. But God help me, I never was good at letting you walk away." The tension snaps. Elena surges toward him, her hand gripping the lapel of his coat, the frustration of the last five years boiling over into a desperate, bruising kiss. It’s not soft. It’s a collision. It’s the reclamation of a fire that never actually went out, only smoldered under the damp weight of their shared history. As they come up for air, Julian’s forehead rests against hers, both of them breathing hard, both of them acknowledging that this—this magnetism—is exactly what will get them killed. "Tomorrow," Julian says, his voice a jagged whisper. "We go to the harbor master. But tonight? Tonight, you stay behind a locked door. Do you understand me?" Elena looks up at him, the journalist in her already planning the next move, the woman in her terrified by the pull she feels toward the man who broke her soul. "I don't take orders, Julian," she says, her voice regaining its sharp edge. "I take allies." EXT. BLACKWOOD DOCKS - NIGHT Outside, the mist rolls in, thick and suffocating, swallowing the pier. In the distance, a pair of headlights flickers to life on the cliffside road—a black SUV watching the salvage office. The game has begun, and in the shadow-drenched low country, the tide is coming in to wash away the evidence of a conspiracy that stretches back decades. Elena Vance has returned home, and for the first time in years, the secrets of Blackwood have something to be afraid of.
